The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. It is observed on 16 November.
The objectives of this day include to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination and Human Rights Education.
People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.
Along with outright injustice and violence, discrimination and marginalization are common forms of intolerance. Education for tolerance should aim at countering influences that lead to fear and exclusion of others, and should help young people develop capacities for independent judgment, critical thinking and ethical reasoning.
Sectarian killing is getting common in Pakistan, the recent incident of Rawalpindi procession violence is another incident of intolerance. Religious tolerance and freedom to perform religious activities freely is one of the main clauses of this observance.
Karachi the metropolitan of Pakistan has been a victim of target killing where millions of people from different communities are residing together. To avoid such intolerant incidents as occurred in Rawalpindi and target killing in Karachi International day of tolerance is being observed.
Nations can only develop themselves if they adopt education and tolerance amongst them. Pakistan which has been a victim of terrorism for the past few years needs to develop tolerance amongst its masses. The country has seen several incidents of intolerance whether it’s the humiliation of human rights or violence on women and children.
In today’s world of technology and science where the world is facing several major challenges such as global warming, terrorism and unemployment in such scenario only tolerant societies can survive these obstacles by overcoming biased mindset with the promotion of education.
