Whatmore to leave as Pakistan coach in February

 Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore will leave his job at the end of February, 
the country's cricket board said Tuesday, saying a mutual agreement had 
been reached not to extend his contract.<br />
    <br />
The
 59-year-old former Australian batsman, who took over in March 2012, has
 faced mounting criticism over Pakistan's dismal run of results in 
recent months, with ex-players regularly calling for him to go.<br />
    <br />
Pakistan went down by 117 runs to South Africa in Sharjah on Monday, completing a 4-1 defeat in their one-day series.<br />
    <br />
The
 Proteas have given Pakistan a torrid time in 2013, beating them 3-0 in 
Tests and 3-2 in one-day internationals in South Africa in 
February-March.<br />
    <br />
Under Whatmore, who led 
Sri Lanka to their World Cup victory in 1996, Pakistan have not won a 
single Test series and the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) interim 
chairman admitted on Friday he was under pressure to sack him.<br />
    <br />
But the board said Whatmore had decided not to seek an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of February.<br />
    <br />
"Whatmore
 had informed the PCB that he would not be seeking a renewal of his 
contract due to his personal and family reasons," said a PCB release.<br />
    <br />
"Under the circumstances, the PCB and Whatmore have mutually agreed to conclude the contract on February 28, 2014."<br />
    <br />
Whatmore's last assignment will be a series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates in December-January.<br />

KARACHI:
 Dr M Shakeel Aamir Mullick, Focal Person for Dengue Surveillance Cell 
Sindh, on Tuesday said that code of conduct to control dengue viral 
fever would soon be enforced in Sindh province.<br />
<br />
He informed 
this while addressing a workshop on "Dengue Clinical Case Management and
 Diagnosis", jointly organized by Health Department, Government of Sindh
 and Dengue Surveillance Cell Sindh at OT Complex Civil Hospital 
Karachi.<br />
Dr Mullick said despite continuous warnings or 
instructions issued by health department and dengue surveillance cell on
 different platforms, the citizens did not pay heed, therefore, the 
disease had spread in the metropolis. He said most of dengue fever 
patients had become victim of dengue mosquito at home and locality by 
not following the instruction of health department. <br />
He said 
government would take action against house inmates, tyre shops owners, 
hotels and parks providing swimming pools facilities for not 
implementing government instructions after enforcement of code of 
conduct in province. He informed that a summary of code of conduct 
regulation had been sent to law department for approval and it would 
soon be implemented in Sindh to control dengue disease. <br />
He 
claimed that government authorities were striving hard to control the 
dengue disease, but people were not fully cooperating with it and were 
ignoring the necessary warnings issued by Health Department. He stressed
 the importance of awareness and prevention to control further spread of
 dengue mosquitoes and larva. <br />
He urged the citizens to maintain 
their homes, locality and workplace and keep them clean in order to save
 from themselves from dengue viral disease as per the instauration of 
experts. Water should not be allowed to stand anywhere in home or 
workplace, he said. Mullick said that control of dengue is not possible 
without community support. <br />
Assistant Professor at Adult 
Infectious Diseases Department, Aga Khan University Hospital, Dr Syed 
Faisal Mehmood said presence of dengue virus in region was main factor 
behind the prevalence of dengue disease in Pakistan. He said earlier a 
large of dengue fever cases were reported in 2006 and afterwards dengue 
fever again visited city in 2013 with double in numbers. <br />
He said 
increasing population was also another important factor of dengue fever 
prevalence in big cities like Karachi and Lahore. He stressed the 
importance for taking proper awareness and precautionary measures to 
prevent people from dengue fever.<br />

Bollywood not on the cards for Saba Qamar

Pakistani actor and model Saba Qamar may have numerous TV roles under her belt, such as <i>Maat</i> and <i>Dastaan</i>, but she has no intention of capitalising on her fame by jumping onto the Bollywood bandwagon.<br />
The actor has been clear about her lack of interest in the world’s 
second largest film industry. In a post on her official Facebook page, 
she has stated “I like Bollywood movies, but I have no intention of 
going [to work] there. I’ve had offers but I don’t want to, so anyone 
who says I’m going to Bollywood is spreading rumors!”<br />
Qamar was reportedly offered a role opposite Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda, a supporting cast member in films such as <i>Once Upon a Time in Mumbai</i> and <i>Heroine</i>,
 which she declined. Qamar believes that Pakistani artistes can only 
obtain “C grade” work in the Bollywood industry because directors and 
producers in India never offer “A grade” work to Pakistani actors.<br />
Qamar can be seen on TV regularly as the host of Geo’s <i>Hum Sub Umeed Se Hain</i> and is preparing to work in Pakistani films in the future.<br />

NEW DELHI (Online) - India Tuesday expressed strong disapproval of 
the meeting between Pakistani prime minister s foreign affairs advisor 
Sartaj Aziz with Hurriyat leaders, saying it would be 
"counter-productive" towards meaningful dialogue between the two 
countries.<br />

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told media persons here 
that India has "done a great deal" to build public opinion in favour of a
 dialogue with Pakistan, and such actions by Pakistan are not 
encouraging but counter-productive.<br />

"If there is a desire for a meaningful dialogue, conducive circumstances have to be created," Khurshid was quoted as saying.<br />

"It would be necessary for Pakistan to keep in mind India s point of 
view, sentiments and sensitivities" for a result-oriented dialogue, he 
said.<br />

However, Salaman said that Pakistan and India had agreed to defuse LoC tensions.<br />

India says it has also raised the issue of Mumbai attacks with Sartaj Aziz.<br />

Fall in Pakistan investment cause of concern: IMF

WASHINGTON (Online) - International Monetary Fund has expressed its 
concern over the decline in investment in Pakistan bringing the 
country’s foreign exchange reserves under pressure.<br />

IMF in its report released here said that Pakistan’s growth rate 
could remain at 2.75 percent during the current fiscal year, while the 
high expenditure and low income could result in the financial deficit to
 gross domestic product at 5.5 percent.<br />

Economic analysts said that the restoration of peace and resolving 
the energy crisis could increase investment in the country and, thereby,
 with the rise in exports the forex reserves could also improve.<br />

Sunni Ittehad Council accepts Taliban challenge of debate

LAHORE - Sunni Ittehad Council has accepted the challenge of debate offered by the Taliban. <br />
Banned Tehreek-e-Taliban spokesman Shahhidullah Shahid on Monday had 
challenged those Ulema for a debate who were criticizing the Taliban.<br />
The Taliban spokesman pledged that TTP would stop its activities in Pakistan if it failed in the debate.<br />
Accepting the challenge, Sunni Ittehad Council chairman Sahibzada 
Hamid Raza said that he was ready for debate with the Taliban on any 
channel.<br />
Sunni Ittehad Council accused the Taliban of indulging in armed 
rebellion against the Islamic state and urged them to accept the 
Constitution of Pakistan.<br />
The statement further said that Taliban’s method of action was 
against the principles of Islamic Jihad. SIC also blamed that the US 
government was violating the sovereignty of Pakistan by the drone 
attacks.<br />
Sahibzada Hamid Raza demanded of the national leadership to build a consensus over NATO supplies and shooting down US drones.<br />

PESHAWAR (AFP) - While the Pakistani government routinely denounces 
US drone strikes, locals say that a sizeable number of people in the 
country s tribal areas support them -- but the threat of Taliban 
reprisals makes them too terrified to speak out.<br />

Pakistan s lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border have borne 
the brunt of the US drone campaign since 2004, with hundreds of missile 
strikes targeting suspected Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.<br />

Islamabad condemns them as a violation of sovereignty and 
counterproductive to efforts to combat militancy, while rights 
campaigners -- and the Pakistani public -- rail against them for killing
 civilians.<br />

Anyone who does speak out in favour of the drones in the tribal areas
 runs the risk of being kidnapped, tortured and murdered by militants --
 their agonising last moments captured on camera.<br />

"Anybody who supports drone strikes, they will try to kill him. They 
will say that person is pro-American, a friend of the Jews," Gul Wali 
Wazir -- not his real name -- from South Waziristan tribal area told 
AFP.<br />

"They will cut his throat or shoot him, They will film his false 
confession, kill him and leave the body on the road with a DVD and a 
note saying that anybody who supports America and drones will face the 
same fate.<br />

"I have seen a dozen such dead bodies."<br />

"US spies" are targeted by a special militant unit, the 
Ittehad-e-Mujahideen Khorasan, and grisly DVDs of their last moments 
distributed.<br />

After a decade of the CIA-run programme, no region in the world has 
been hit by more strikes than Pakistan s tribal areas -- a rugged, 
dirt-poor region roughly the size of Belgium.<br />

Ten days ago, one of the remote-controlled missiles eliminated the feared Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban.<br />

The area is off-limits to foreign journalists and aid groups, so the 
precise number and identity of those killed by drones is difficult to 
establish with certainty.<br />

The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism estimates that 
between 2,528 and 3,644 people have been killed in 378 drone strikes in 
Pakistan, including 416-948 civilians.<br />

A survey by the New America Foundation in 2010 found that a sizeable 
proportion of people -- more than one in five -- in the tribal areas 
backed drone strikes, and a number of experts interviewed by AFP spoke 
of an increasing trend to support them.<br />

Better than ground offensive?<br />

The Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) became a stronghold 
for hundreds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked extremists who fled 
Afghanistan to regroup and launch cross-border attacks after the US-led 
invasion in 2001.<br />

Tribal chiefs initially welcomed them, but since 2009 they have grown
 weary of the "taxes" the militants impose and the insecurity they 
bring, and angry at them for killing elders who opposed their presence.<br />

Safdar Hayat Khan Dawar, former head of the Tribal Union of 
Journalists, from North Waziristan, the area most affected by drone 
strikes, said the missiles were the preferred solution to the problem of
 militancy.<br />

"There are two options in FATA: a military operation or the drone strikes," he said in an interview in Peshawar.<br />

"The military option, people hate it because the army don t kill 
militants but civilians. So if you ask people to choose, they will 
choose drone attacks."<br />

In 2009 the army carried out a major ground operation to retake 
control of South Waziristan from the militants, with more than 30,000 
troops pouring in for an offensive.<br />

The UN said more than 200,000 people were forced from their homes by the fighting.<br />

"Those people who became IDPs (internally displaced) due to the 
military operation, those people who are victimised by the Taliban and 
the militants, all the families whose family members are beheaded 
because they were accused of spying for America -- why would they oppose
 drone attacks?" said Nizam Dawar, director of the Tribal Development 
Network.<br />

Dawar s own family in North Waziristan recently had a visit from militants after he spoke of his support for drones.<br />

For drone supporters, tribal leaders sheltering militants only have 
themselves to blame if their families are killed by the American 
strikes.<br />

"We think this is due to their own negligence. The responsibility 
lies with the people who offer these terrorists a shelter," said Arbab 
Mujeed ur-Rehman of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.<br />

"A person who is not involved in terrorist activity does not feel threatened by the drones."<br />

In the markets of the tribal areas, militants hand out leaflets 
urging people to denounce "traitors" in their families, heightening the 
climate of suspicion in a region already awash with conspiracy theories.<br />

India Mars mission back on track after engine glitch

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India's Mars spacecraft was "successfully" raised 
into a higher orbit around Earth early on Tuesday, after a brief engine 
failure during an earlier attempt, the space agency said.<br />
The Mars Orbiter Mission, which blasted off on November 5 for a 
11-month trip to the Red Planet, is being launched on its way via an 
unusual "slingshot" method for interplanetary journeys.<br />
Lacking a large enough rocket to blast directly out of Earth's 
atmosphere and gravitational pull, the Indian spacecraft is orbiting 
Earth until the end of the month while building up enough velocity to 
break free.<br />
On Tuesday, the spacecraft completed a fourth repositioning to take 
it 100,000 kilometres (62,000 miles) from Earth, after the thruster 
engines failed during an attempt on Monday, leading the auto-pilot to 
take over.<br />
"Fourth supplementary orbit raising manoeuvre of Mars Orbiter 
Spacecraft... has been successfully completed," the Indian Space 
Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement.<br />
The first three manoeuvres, which involve firing additional fuel into
 the rocket's engine, were successfully performed last week.<br />
The ISRO said the brief engine failure on Monday was not a setback to the ambitious low-cost mission.<br />
India has never before attempted interplanetary travel and more than 
half of all missions to Mars have ended in failure, including China's in
 2011 and Japan's in 2003.<br />
The cost of the project, at 4.5 billion rupees ($73 million), is less
 than a sixth of the $455 million earmarked for a Mars probe by NASA 
which will launch later this month.<br />
ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan has called the mission a "turning 
point" for India's space ambitions and one which would go on to prove 
its capabilities in rocket technology.<br />

SC rejects ECP plea for LB polls' postponement

ISLAMABAD  - The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an 
application filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone 
local bodies' elections for three or four months.<br />

The apex court ruled that all petitions regarding local bodies 
election had already been disposed off on November 5, and declared the 
current petition as non-maintainable.<br />

The polls are scheduled for November 27 in Sindh and December 7 in 
Punjab and Balochistan – the dates provided as options to the ECP by the
 Supreme Court.<br />

<br />

The commission, in its petition, had prayed that holding credible 
elections were not possible on the schedule it announced earlier.<br />

The ECP said that since the printing of ballot papers was impossible 
within the short time and rules and regulations prepared by the 
provinces had flaws, therefore, the holding of local body polls was not 
possible. <br />

The commission had also told court that Punjab and Sindh provinces had not finalised the delimitations as yet.<br />

Oil prices rise after Iran nuclear talks stall

NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - Oil prices rose on Monday after marathon talks 
in Geneva aimed at convincing Iran to curb its disputed nuclear program 
ended without an agreement.<br />

Nevertheless, negotiators said they drew closer to a long-elusive 
deal, which could ease sanctions on Tehran and bring the major oil 
producer back into the global market.<br />

Weekend economic data from China was also bullish for the market, 
showing the economy of the huge oil importer is still growing steadily 
with no particular signs of weakness.<br />

New York traded for only a half-day to mark the Veterans Day holiday,
 with the main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for December 
delivery, gaining 54 cents to close at $95.14 a barrel.<br />

In London trade, Brent North Sea crude for December climbed $1.28 cents to $106.40 a barrel.<br />

After years of stalemate, nuclear talks between world powers and 
Tehran were tantalizingly close to a breakthrough which could bring 
Iranian oil back onto the market, potentially pushing prices lower.<br />

The two sides failed to close a deal at the weekend, but the marathon
 talks saw the top US and Iranian diplomats meet for seven hours, a 
duration unprecedented for decades after the 1979 Iranian revolution. <br />

The P5+1 group of major powers -- Britain, France, the United States,
 Russia, China plus Germany -- plan to meet again with Iranian delegates
 on November 20 with the hope of securing a short-term deal that would 
freeze the country's nuclear activities while both sides work on a 
comprehensive agreement.<br />

World economy being sustained by extraordinary aid

WASHINGTON (AP)  Five years after a global financial crisis erupted, the world's biggest economies still need to be propped up.<br />

They're growing and hiring a little faster and creating more jobs, 
but only with extraordinary aid from central banks or government 
spending. And economists say major countries may need help for years 
more.<br />

From the United States to Europe to Japan, central banks are pumping 
cash into economies and keeping loan rates near record lows. Even 
fast-growing China has rebounded from an uncharacteristic slump with the
 help of government money that's poured into projects and made loans 
easily available from state-owned banks.<br />

For now, thanks in part to the intervention, the world economy is 
improving. The International Monetary Fund expects global growth to rise
 to 3.6 percent in 2014 from 2.9 percent this year.<br />

The improvement "does not mean that a sustainable recovery is on firm
 footing," Angel Gurria, secretary-general of the Organization for 
Economic Cooperation and Development, warned last month. He said major 
economies will need stimulus from "extraordinary monetary policies" to 
sustain momentum into 2014. Many economists think stimulus will be 
needed even longer.<br />

Yet these policies carry their own risks: Critics, including some of 
the Fed's own policymakers, note that the cash the central banks are 
pumping into the global financial system flows into stocks, bonds and 
commodities like oil. Their prices can escalate to unsustainable levels 
and raise the risks of a market crash.<br />

Other analysts warn that the easy-money policies could cause runaway inflation in the future.<br />

Here's a look at how the world's major economies are faring:<br />

UNITED STATES<br />

The U.S. economy grew at an unexpectedly solid 2.8 percent annual 
pace from July through September, though consumers and businesses slowed
 their spending. And U.S. employers added a surprising strong 204,000 
jobs in October.<br />

The Fed has been debating whether hiring is healthy enough to justify
 slowing its monthly bond purchases. Despite the solid October jobs 
report, most economists think the Fed won't reduce its bond buying 
before early next year.<br />

Janet Yellen, who faces a confirming hearing this week for her 
nomination to lead the Fed starting in January, is expected to sustain 
its low-rate policies.<br />

Even at reduced levels, the bond purchases would continue to 
stimulate the economy by adding money to the financial system and 
lowering loans rates to encourage borrowing and spending. The Fed's 
purchases have helped offset U.S. government spending cuts.<br />

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, thinks the 
U.S. economy will be strong enough to manage without any help from Fed 
bond purchases by the end of 2014. He sees the Fed raising short-term 
rates, which it's kept at a record low near zero since late 2008, 
sometime in 2015.<br />

But weaning the U.S. economy off Fed support, he says, is "tricky ...
 If you do it too slowly, you could ignite inflation. If you do it too 
quickly, you run the risk of killing the recovery."<br />

EUROPE<br />

After enduring two recessions since 2009, the 17 countries that use 
the euro currency are expected to eke out their second straight quarter 
of growth from July through September. But many economists say the 
eurozone's growth might not meet even the feeble 0.3 percent quarterly 
pace achieved from April through June. The latest quarterly figure will 
be announced Thursday.<br />

The European Central Bank surprised investors last week by cutting 
its benchmark refinancing rate to a record 0.25 percent. It acted after 
economic reports exposed the weakness of the recovery. Inflation last 
month was a scant 0.7 percent. That raised the risk of deflation a 
prolonged drop in wages, prices and the value of assets like stocks and 
homes.<br />

The rate cut "signals that the ECB is not prepared to accept the risk
 that the euro area falls into deflation," says Jacob Kirkegaard, senior
 fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.<br />

"Once prices begin to fall, you start to see consumers and businesses 
change their behavior," Kirkegaard says. "Why should you buy a car today
 if the price of the car is going to fall tomorrow? Falling into the 
trap can be very difficult to get out of."<br />

JAPAN<br />

Japan's economic recovery has gained momentum since Prime Minister 
Shinzo Abe took office in late 2012. Under "Abenomics," the government 
and central bank have injected money into the economy through stimulus 
spending and rate cutting. The economy grew at a robust 3.8 percent 
annual rate from April through June.<br />

But economists worry about whether the recovery can be sustained and 
whether Japan can grow enough to make up in tax revenue what it's 
spending on stimulus.<br />

Noriko Hama, a professor at Kyoto's Doshisha University, contends 
that only higher wages and rates will give people the income and 
confidence they need to spend more and restore the economy's health.<br />

Like the Fed, the Bank of Japan could struggle with how to time and 
carry out a reversal of its easy money policy once the economy improves 
or if inflation or asset bubbles emerge as a threat.<br />

"They have placed themselves in a very difficult situation indeed," Hama says. "It's a double-edged sword."<br />

CHINA<br />

China's economy grew at a two-decade low of 7.5 percent in the three 
months that ended in June compared with a year earlier. That's still a 
vigorous pace compared with the developed economies of Europe, the 
United States and Japan. But for China, it marked a slowdown, and 
Beijing launched a mini-stimulus program, spending on railway 
construction and other public works.<br />

It worked: Growth edged up to 7.8 percent from July through September from a year earlier.<br />

Yet some economists doubt the gains in China will last.<br />

"I can't see the rebound lasting for very much longer, because it has
 been driven by government projects," says Mark Williams of Capital 
Economics.<br />

In the latest quarter, more than half the reported growth was due to 
investment, not trade or consumption. Many economists say China's 
continued reliance on government-led investment is dangerous. It 
threatens to produce factories that make goods no one wants and unneeded
 real estate developments that can't repay loans.<br />

China responded to the 2008 global crisis by ordering its banks to 
open their lending spigots. The recovery has been underpinned by a surge
 in borrowing, which is up 20 percent this year.<br />

China's central bank has warned that the aggressive lending is unsustainable and could cause bad loans to pile up dangerously.<br />

"I think we're going to see policymakers try to crack down on credit in the next few months," Williams says.<br />

lungs which fill with air when a healthy person breathes) are filled 
with pus and fluid, which makes breathing painful and limits oxygen 
intake. Infants and children younger than age 2 years are at higher risk
 of contracting pneumonia as their immune systems are still developing. 
Symptoms of pneumonia in children include rapid or difficult breathing, 
cough, fever, chills, headaches, loss of appetite and wheezing. They may
 also face difficulty to breathe, with their chests moving in or 
retracting during inhalation.<br />

Although the death toll due to pneumonia is too high, vaccines hold 
promise of saving children from dying of pneumonia. Vaccines can protect
 children by preparing their bodies to fight many potentially deadly 
diseases. They are responsible for the control of many infectious 
diseases that were once common around the world, including smallpox, 
polio, measles, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), rubella (German 
measles), mumps, tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib).<br />

PM approves low-cost ‘Apna Ghar’ housing scheme

approved the establishment of a company under the supervision of the<br />

Ministry of Housing and Works to initiate a government housing scheme for the low-income strata of society.<br />

The scheme would be called “Apna Ghar” scheme. The Prime Minister 
made these directions while presiding over a high-level meeting on 
low-income housing scheme here at the Prime Minister House this evening.<br />

The Prime Minister said that the objective of this scheme is to 
provide housing units to low-income sections of society at low-cost and 
easy installments.<br />

He further directed that a separate package should be initiated under
 the rubric of the “Apna Ghar” housing scheme for the needy, widows etc.
 and that such people be separately given financial assistance to pay 
the installments.<br />

The Prime Minister resolved that a respectable living on the models 
of Turkey and China would be made available to the citizens of the 
country.<br />

The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Housing and Works to 
chalk out all the details and other criteria of the project by the end 
of this month.<br />

 A Singaporean man with an unusual superhero-like name turned out to be a
 villain who consumed drugs and stole from his brother.<br /><br />Batman 
bin Suparman, which means Batman son of Suparman in the Malay language, 
was jailed on Monday for two years and nine months for various offences 
including stealing his brother's automated teller machine card to make 
withdrawals, media reported.<br /><br />The 23-year-old unemployed man had also broken into the office of a firm in western Singapore to steal money and taken heroin.<br /><br />Batman,
 who has his own fan club on Facebook, became a social media sensation 
after an image of his identity card with his unusual name was circulated

 Deployment of army in sensitive towns of Sindh begun Tuesday as part of
 security measures for mourning processions which are taken out during 
9th and 10th Muharram across the country, SAMAA reported.<br /><br />The Sindh government had formally requested for military deployment in various sensitive cities, including Karachi.<br /><br />Army
 troops have started moving from Sindh’s Pano Aqil cantonment to Sindh 
interior cities and from Malir cantt. to different areas of Karachi, 
officials said.<br /><br />As part of Muharram security plan, the Sindh 
government has banned pillion-riding on the motorbike for 9th and 10th 
Muharram in Karachi.<br /><br />More than 25,000 security personnel of 
police and Rangers would also be deployed across Karachi to play a 
primary role in the security plan. <br /><br />Over 5000 majalis and more than 750 mourning processions would be held across the city during Muharram. </span><br />

One in five suns has Earth-sized world

 data from Nasa's Kepler space telescope, Astronomers argue that one in 
five stars like the Sun hosts Earth-sized world located in the 
"habitable zone".<br />
<br />
This zone is the region around a star where temperatures allow for water
 - a key ingredient for life - to stay liquid at the surface.<br />
<br />
Last week, astronomers announced the discovery of an Earth-sized, rocky 
planet orbiting its star at a hundredth of the distance between the 
Earth and the Sun.<br />
<br />
Temperatures on this world would reach between 2,000C and 2,800C, with 
much of the dayside molten, meaning there would be little chance for 
life here.<br />
<br />
But team members cautioned that even finding Earth-sized planets in the 
habitable - or "Goldilocks" - zones of their stars was no guarantee 
these worlds would be hospitable to life.<br />
<br />
Researchers had previously combed through some 42,000 stars and 
discovered 600 likely planets. Of these, 10 were both Earth-sized and 
located at a distance that was just right for liquid water to persist on
 the surface.<br />
<br />
However, the team then corrected for planets that might have been missed
 by software designed to sift through the Kepler data for planet 
signatures. This process involved introducing fake planets into the 
data.<br />
<br />
Accounting for these missed worlds, as well as the fact that only a 
small fraction of planets are oriented so that they cross in front of 
their host star as seen from Earth, the astronomers were able to 
estimate that 22% of all Sun-like stars in the Milky Way have 
Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone.</span></span><br />

Cyber attack "war game" to test London banks

 Thousands of staff across dozens of London's financial firms will be 
put through a "war game" scenario on Tuesday to test how well they can 
handle a major cyber attack.<br /><br />In one of the largest exercises of 
its kind in the world, the test dubbed "Waking Shark II" will bombard 
firms with a series of announcements and scenarios, such as a major 
attack on computer systems hitting stock exchanges and unfolding on 
social media.<br /><br />It will be co-ordinated from a single room housing 
regulators, government officials and staff from banks and other 
financial firms, people familiar with the matter said.<br /><br />Hundreds more people are expected to be involved from their own offices as the exercise plays out, they said.<br /><br />Simulations
 are likely to include how banks ensure the availability of cash from 
ATM machines or deal with a liquidity squeeze in the wholesale market 
and how well firms communicate and coordinate with authorities and each 
other.<br /><br />There will be a particular focus on investment banking operations, one of the sources said.<br /><br />Regulators
 and companies are growing increasingly concerned about the threat of 
cyber crime to the banking system, including the impact of coordinated 
online assaults or hacking attacks on specific banks. The Bank of 
England's Financial Policy Committee has already told banks to 
strengthen their defences.<br /><br />The London event will be co-ordinated 
by the Bank of England, the Treasury and the Financial Conduct Authority
 and follows a similar exercise two years ago.<br /><br />London is not 
alone in testing its preparation. New York staged "Quantum Dawn 2" a few
 months ago to simulate how firms would cope with a cyber attack in

BERLIN: This time it splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean — but what about next time?<br />
   <br />
The
 European Space Agency says one of its research satellites re-entered 
the Earth's atmosphere early Monday on an orbit that passed over 
Siberia, the western Pacific Ocean, the eastern Indian Ocean and 
Antarctica.<br />
<br />
The 1,100-kilogram (2,425-pound) satellite 
disintegrated in the atmosphere but about 25 percent of it — about 275 
kilograms (600 pounds) of "space junk" — slammed into the Atlantic 
between Antarctica and South America, a few hundred kilometers (miles) 
from the Falkland Islands, ESA said. It caused no known damage.<br />
The
 satellite — called the GOCE, for Gravity field and Ocean Circulation 
Explorer — was launched in 2009 to map the Earth's gravitational field. 
The information is being used to understand ocean circulation, sea 
levels, ice dynamics and the Earth's interior. The satellite had been 
gradually descending in orbit over the last three weeks after running 
out of fuel Oct. 21.<br />
But how much space junk is out there? Here's a look:<br />
SPACE JUNK FLYING AROUND THE COSMOS<br />
Some
 6,600 satellites have been launched. Some 3,600 remain in space but 
only about 1,000 are still operational, according to ESA. Not all are 
still intact, and the U.S. Space Surveillance Network tracks some 23,000
 space objects, ESA said. A lot of junk comes down unnoticed, said ESA 
Space Debris Office deputy head Holger Krag. Statistically, he said, 
"roughly every week you have a re-entry like GOCE."<br />
AND WHEN IT STARTS TO FALL<br />
About
 100 to 150 metric tons (110 to 165 tons) of space junk re-enters 
Earth's atmosphere each year, according to Heiner Klinkrad, the head of 
ESA's Space Debris Office. In 56 years of spaceflight, a total of 15,000
 metric tons (16,500 tons) of human-made space objects have re-entered 
the atmosphere.<br />
HOW FAST ARE WE TALKING?<br />
Space junk — mostly
 satellites and rocket stages or fragments — typically travels at about 
28,000 km/h (17,400 mph) shortly before re-entry at about 120 kilometers
 (75 miles) above the earth, according to ESA. It starts to slow down 
and heat up in the dense atmosphere. In the last 10 minutes, it hits a 
travelling speed roughly equal to that of a Formula One racing car 
—between 200 kph to 300 kph (125 mph to 190 mph).<br />
HOW DANGEROUS IS SPACE JUNK?<br />
There
 have been no known human injuries or significant property damage caused
 by space junk, according to ESA. Unlike meteorites, which hurl into the
 Earth as solid chunks travelling about three times faster, space junk 
typically falls as fragments and is distributed over a fallout zone up 
to 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) long. Krag says fragments from a 
satellite came down in 2011 over the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech 
Republic but no pieces were ever found.<br />
CAN'T WE REDIRECT THIS STUFF?<br />
When
 systems are still functioning, spacecraft can be maneuvered to try and 
direct them to land in areas where there would be minimal impact, like 
into an ocean. In the case of uncontrolled re-entries, scientists are 
able to predict where the impact will be — but that can be a very wide 
swath. The GOCE satellite's systems kept on working much longer than 
expected, providing data that Krag said will be invaluable in helping 
scientists figure out prediction models for future space junk descents.<br />
MOST FAMOUS SPACE JUNK CRASHES<br />
One
 of the best-known cases is NASA's Skylab space station, which 
re-entered in 1979. About 74 metric tons (82 tons) hit the Earth — some 
of it in Australia and the rest falling into the Indian Ocean. Fragments
 of Russia's Mir space station weighing about 135 metric tons (149 tons)
 came down in 2001 in a controlled dive into the Pacific Ocean. More 
recently, in 2011, NASA's UARS satellite crashed into the Pacific and 
Germany's ROSAT satellite landed in the Bay of Bengal. None caused any

 Muttahida Quami Movement’s Coordination Committee pleaded with Sindh 
government and Election Commission for two-day extension in date of 
submission of nomination papers for Local Bodies elections in Sindh, 
SAMAA reported Tuesday.<br /><br />The MQM’s Rabta Committee asserts that 
thousands of candidates could not file their candidature owing to lack 
of appropriate arrangements, adding some Returning Officers (ROs) said 
that the papers could not be accepted as new schedule is about to be 
issued from Election Commission and that date for arrangements is being 
pushed ahead.<br /><br />The committee noted if the uncertainty regarding 
the new schedule and extension in date of LB polls persists, thousands 
of candidates will stand deprived of their fundamental right of taking 
part in the elections.<br /><br />It should be mentioned here that November 
11 and 12 were specified for the submission of papers; however, 
thousands of candidates could not submit their nominations after the

 At least two people were killed and 20 others injured when their 
passenger coach plying from Raiwind to Karachi overturned near Jamshoro 
Toll Plaza. <br /><br />According to the Rescue 
sources, a fast-moving passenger coach, while it was trying to overtake,
 went out of driver’s control and capsized near Jamshoro toll plaza, 
killing 40-year Hafiz Saad and 50-year Noman.<br /><br />The deceased, residents of North Nazimabad, was on their way back after attending mass religious congregation in Raiwind.<br /><br />The injured have been shifted to Liaquat Medical University, Jamshoro.</span><br />

Dollar slips vs euro after rally; outlook still upbeat

 YORK: The dollar fell on Monday after a two-day rise against the euro 
as investors locked in gains, but its prospects remained upbeat on 
expectations the Federal Reserve might scale back its stimulus program 
sooner than thought following a strong U.S. jobs report.<br /><br />A U.S. 
government holiday on Monday kept many investors on the sidelines and 
volumes low. While the euro managed to recoup some of its losses, 
analysts cautioned against reading too much into Monday's trading.<br /><br />The
 overall expectation is for the dollar to perform favourably against the
 euro following a shock interest-rate cut from the European Central 
Bank, and a blockbuster U.S. jobs number last week. That robust 
employment figure has everybody talking about a December reduction in 
the Fed's bond buying, which should be positive for the greenback 
because it means there would be fewer dollars in the financial system.<br /><br />"Actual
 or expected tapering will be positive for the dollar. Further delays of
 tapering will alter the path but not the ultimate level of the dollar: 
higher than here," said Stephen Jen, co-founder of London-based 
investment firm SLJ Macro Partners.<br /><br />The euro rose to $1.3416 on 
lower-than-usual volumes, but gains were capped as investors began to 
sell from around $1.3400 through to $1.3410. The euro hit a two-month 
low of $1.3295 last Thursday after the ECB cut its main interest rate to
 a record low 0.25 percent.<br /><br />The euro-zone currency was last trading up 0.3 percent at $1.3414.<br /><br />"We
 think this latest bounce in the euro is setting up potentially good 
opportunities to enter new shorts against the dollar and sterling, and 
against the higher-yielding commodity bloc currencies," said Vassili 
Serebriakov, currency strategist, at BNP Paribas in New York.<br /><br />Against the yen, the dollar gained 0.1 percent to 99.19 yen.<br /><br />The
 dollar index slipped 0.3 percent to 81.061 after setting a two-month 
high at 81.482 following Friday's report showing U.S. employers added 
204,000 jobs in October - well above the forecast for an increase of 
125,000 jobs.<br /><br />The data was even more surprising as it came in a 
month when a budget standoff in Washington forced a 16-day government 
shutdown, suggesting the U.S. economic recovery was on a firmer footing 
than previously thought.<br /><br />As a result, U.S. Treasury yields rose, 
with the gap between two-year U.S. Treasuries and their German 
counterparts at its widest since mid-July. U.S. bond markets were shut 
on Monday and with yields rising quickly in the past week, some expect 
Treasuries to consolidate.<br /><br />The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury 
note's yield was also near a two-month high as some investors brought 
forward to December their expectations for when the Fed will start to 
withdraw its stimulus.<br /><br />That underpinned the dollar as rising 
yields make a currency more attractive to hold. After the government 
shutdown, most had pushed back the Fed's "tapering" expectations to 
March 2014.<br /><br /><b>SELL THE EURO</b><br />Speculators have 
cut long euro positions, and this trend could gather momentum with the 
euro zone facing a prolonged period of slowing inflation. That could see
 the ECB deploying more aggressive monetary easing instruments.<br /><br />"We
 think investors are caught long near $1.3450, with euro/dollar primed 
for a move toward $1.32 - a level euro-zone and U.S. two-year yield 
differentials would point toward," said Chris Turner, chief currency 
strategist at ING in London.<br /><br />Just $2.89 billion in euros traded 
on Monday, according to Reuters Dealing data , making it the 
lowest-volume day for the euro since Oct. 21.<br /><br />Although the ECB's 
rate-setting committee was split about Thursday's decision to cut rates,
 Executive Board member Benoit Coeure said on Saturday that the bank 
could trim interest rates further and provide more liquidity.--REUTERS</span><br />

Goods transporters to meet again today, as strike continues

 Goods transporters decided to go ahead with their strike until all of 
their demands are accepted, though the most of their demands have 
already been taken up at a meeting with Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad
 Khan in chair.<br /><br />Commissioner Karachi has been assigned a role of focal person for the resolution of problems. <br /><br />The
 sources said the Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) assured to 
scale down tax ratio from five to two percent in a meeting at Governor 
House.<br /><br />The transoprters have also been given assurances that 
security check posts will be set up on Northern Bypass on complaints of 
mugging incidents.<br /><br />Talking to media after the talks, Joint 
Secretary United Goods Transport Alliance Imdad Naqvi expressed 
satisfaction over the meeting with the governor, saying the issue of FBR
 tax has been resolved and hoped that all other matters also would be 
tackled.<br /><br />He furthermore added that the strike will continue until
 all demands are accepted. He said the negotiations will be held again

South Africa beat Pakistan by 117 runs in 5th ODI

SHARJAH (AFP) - AB de Villiers stormed to an unbeaten century to help
 South Africa beat Pakistan convincingly by 117 runs in the fifth and 
final one-day in Sharjah on Monday, winning the five-match series 4-1.<br />
AB de Villiers scored 115 from 102 balls with ten boundaries and 
three sixes -- his 15th one-day hundred -- to lift South Africa to an 
imperious 268-7 before bowling Pakistan out for 151 in 35.3 overs.<br />
Sohaib Maqsood top-scored with a solid 53 but otherwise Pakistan 
failed to capitalise a weakened South African bowling attack with 
spearheads Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, and spinner Imran Tahir rested 
for the meaningless match as the series was already decided.<br />
Pakistan were 8-2 with Ahmed Shehzad (two) and Mohammad Hafeez (six) 
by the fifth over, once again highlighting the top-order failure in the 
series.<br />
It was Maqsood, who hit 56 on his debut in Abu Dhabi on Friday, who 
gave some consolation to another lackluster batting effort with a 
63-ball half-century before he became one of two victims for Jean-Paul 
Duminy who finished with 2-14. Wayne Parnell finished with 3-36.<br />
Umar Akmal made 30 while skipper Misbah-ul Haq managed 18. Shahid 
Afridi (nine) and Umar Amin (five) failed once more as South Africa took
 the last six wickets for a mere 41 runs.<br />
The South African skipper hit a 102-ball 115 studded with ten 
boundaries and three sixes to lift South Africa who won the toss and 
batted on a slow Sharjah stadium pitch.<br />
De Villiers lifted the tempo in the final overs, hitting Sohail 
Tanvir s final over for 25 runs, reaching his hundred with a four 
towards mid-wicket, which came off 99 balls. He then hit the left-armer 
for six, four and four to help South Africa add 114 in the last ten 
overs.<br />
At 105 he also completed 6,000 one-day runs, becoming the fifth South
 African batsmen to reach the milestone. Jacques Kallis (11,469), 
Herschelle Gibbs (8094), Graeme Smith (6976) and Gary Kirsten (6798) 
were others to score 6,000 or more one-day runs for South Africa.<br />
De Villiers was initially slow, reaching his fifty off 70 balls, with
 a big six off Saeed Ajmal towards mid-wicket. He added an invaluable 83
 for the sixth wicket with Ryan McLaren (27) before lashing out in the 
final overs.<br />
De Villiers had built the innings with an invaluable 62 runs stand 
for the fourth wicket with Faf du Plessis who made an 89-balls 46 with 
the help of two boundaries.<br />
Quinton de Kock (34) added 50 with Du Plessis after Hashim Amla fell in the first over of the innings for three.<br />
Ajmal finished with 3-45 while Khan took 2-57.<br />
South Africa won the first match by one run in Sharjah before 
Pakistan levelled the series with 66-run win in Dubai. South Africa then
 won both the matches in Abu Dhabi by 68 and 28 runs respectively.<br />
The two teams now play Twenty20 internationals in Dubai on Wednesday and Friday.<br />
