Karachi: Dengue fever death toll reaches 22

KARACHI: The dengue fever death toll in Karachi reached 22 as another patients died in the city on Tuesday. <br />
In Sindh province so far 24 dengue patients had died, 22 in the city and two in Hyderabad. <br />
Dr
 M Shakeel Aamir Mullick, Provincial Focal Person (Dengue Surveillance 
Sindh), said a 34 years old man resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal died on 
November 4. He was admitted in hospital on November 2. <br />
He said 34 new dengue cases were reported late by health facilities: 2 on Nov 1, 2 on Nov 3, and 27 on November 7. <br />
Moreover he said during last 24 hours 21 new cases were also reported including 11 admitted patients and 10 OPD patients. <br />
He said so 3414 dengue cases have been reported this year in Karachi, 505 in Hyderabad and 36 in rest of Sindh.<br />
The
 citizens have criticized the performance of provincial health, local 
government and other related departments for their failure to check the 
dengue virus. <br />
The dismal sanitary situation in Hyderabad, Karachi
 and other towns of Sindh, particularly overflowing sewers, has provided
 ideal breeding grounds to dengue mosquitoes, while no serious efforts 
are yet initiated to kills the larva of this mosquito, the main cause of
 the spread of this dreaded virus. (PPI)<br />

Khan said that it was unfortunate that instead of showing unity against 
the strikes, nation appears to be divided on the key issue. <br /><br />“My party was against military operation from day one.  After slashing interest rates to almost nothing and printing trillions 
of dollars, central banks are becoming increasingly reliant on another 
policy weapon: sucker punching markets.<br /><br />The European Central Bank
 shocked investors and forecasters last Thursday by cutting its main 
refinancing rate to a record low, reacting to a shock decline in 
inflation.<br /><br />It was the second big central bank surprise in less 
than two months, after the U.S. Federal Reserve decided in September not
 to trim its monthly bond purchase stimulus.<br /><br />And beyond the immediate impact on financial markets, central banks' shock therapy tactics have also had a lasting effect.<br /><br />The
 yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond -- one measure of government 
borrowing costs -- fell sharply in the aftermath of the Fed's decision, 
and it shows no signs of revisiting September's peaks for the year any 
time soon.<br /><br />The ECB's rate cut helped weaken the euro more than 1 
percent against the dollar, and most economists polled by Reuters reckon
 it will put the currency on a firmly lower path from here -- huge help 
for the fragile euro zone recovery. <ECB/INT><br /><br />With scant 
room left to cut interest rates again and appetite for more rounds of 
money printing waning, economists say surprising markets will 
increasingly feature in policymaking.<br /><br />"It makes sense that with 
the artillery becoming depleted, central banks want more bang for their 
buck now. One way of doing that is to launch surprises in markets," said
 Philip Shaw, chief economist at Investec in London.<br /><br />"It wouldn't
 be a shock if the ECB was pleased that it surprised markets," he added,
 noting the ECB managed this without breaking its guidance to keep 
interest rates low or lower for an extended period of time.<br /><br />AN OLD TOOL, BUT A GOOD ONE<br /><br />Jolting markets with an unexpected decision has always been in the central bankers' toolkit.<br /><br />Germany's
 Bundesbank, for instance, was famed for its sudden moves when it set 
monetary policy for Europe's biggest economy in the pre-euro days, said 
Elwin de Groot, senior market economist at Rabobank in Amsterdam.<br /><br />But there are good reasons why bolt-from-the-blue policy moves are even more effective today.<br /><br />"In
 recent years, the trend in central bank policymaking has been for more 
transparency, more guidance, and trying not to surprise the market," 
said de Groot.<br /><br />"But occasionally you can surprise, and it works 
better. It keeps the market sharp; it sends a strong signal to the 
market that its assumptions were wrong."<br /><br />This year has been peppered with such instances.<br /><br />Back
 in April, economists expected the Bank of Japan would ease policy -- 
but few dreamed it would unveil a plan to unleash $1.4 trillion worth of
 monetary stimulus into the economy over less than two years.<br /><br />And wrong-footing markets has become a defining policy tool for the ECB since Mario Draghi became its president.<br /><br />The ECB cut rates unexpectedly at the first meeting where Draghi was in charge, two years ago this month.<br /><br />His
 shock announcement last July that the ECB would take on rising 
government borrowing costs and do "whatever it takes" to save the euro 
proved decisive in easing the region's debt crisis.<br /><br />It remains to be seen whether Draghi's incoming counterpart at the Fed, Janet Yellen, will share his penchant for surprise.<br /><br />Markets
 might get a better sense of that when the U.S. Senate Banking Committee
 vets Yellen's nomination as Fed chairman on Thursday to replace Ben 
Bernanke, whose term expires on January 31.<br /><br />In a quiet week for 
international economic data, focus will also rest on the Bank of 
England's quarterly Inflation Report outlook for the UK economy, due on 
Wednesday, the second since Mark Carney's appointment as governor.<br /><br />"What
 markets will be looking for is where the new forecasts lie, and in 
particular, where the Monetary Policy Committee views the unemployment 
rate is going," said Investec's Shaw.<br /><br />The Bank of England left 
interest rates at record lows on Thursday, but is likely to suggest next
 week that borrowing costs could rise sooner than it had forecast as the

Marvel's 'Thor' soars to top of U.S.-Canada movie charts

 ANGELES: Marvel superhero Thor pounded his box office competitors over 
the weekend, muscling movie sequel "Thor: The Dark World" to the top of 
U.S. and Canadian charts with a hefty $86.1 million (53.7 million 
pounds) in debut ticket sales.<br /><br />The 3D film starring Chris 
Hemsworth trounced last week's top movies. Raunchy comedy "Jackass 
Presents: Bad Grandpa" finished in second place with $11.3 million from 
Friday through Sunday, according to Hollywood.com.<br /><br />"Free Birds," 
the 3D movie featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as 
turkeys who team up and travel back in time to get turkey off 
Thanksgiving dinner plates, earned the No. 3 slot with $11.2 million, 
just ahead of senior citizen buddy comedy "Last Vegas" which took in 
$11.1 million.<br /><br />"Thor: The Dark World" also hauled in $94 million 
from international markets, where the movie began playing on October 30,
 distributor Walt Disney Co said. IMAX showings added another $11 
million globally, and its combined global sales through Sunday reached 
$327 million.<br /><br />The new "Thor" instalment co-stars Natalie Portman 
as the love interest for Thor, the mighty god of thunder who battles to 
save his homeland of Asgard from evil forces. Tom Hiddleston plays 
Thor's villainous brother Loki.<br /><br />"Thor 2" fell a bit short of 
industry forecasts that it would kick off with up to $92 million at 
North American (U.S. and Canadian) theatres. But the sequel opened 
stronger than the original movie, which debuted with $65.7 million in 
May 2011.<br /><br />Thor also appeared in 2012 smash hit movie "The 
Avengers," which helped stoke interest in the character. According to a 
poll by the Fandango movie website, 72 percent of ticket buyers said 
fond memories of Thor in "Avengers" influenced their choice to see 
"Thor: The Dark World." The "Thor" sequel cost $170 million, Disney 
said.<br /><br />"It's a great start," said Dave Hollis, executive vice 
president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, adding that Disney 
would have considered "anything north of $80 million to be a good 
result."<br /><br />Hollis also noted that the film was playing especially well with family audiences.<br /><br />"Marvel
 has transitioned," he said. "This is an everybody picture." Business 
ticked up as the weekend went on, and he said Disney was anticipating an

winner, sci-fi thriller "Ender's Game," dropped to fifth place, taking

<span class="news_detail" id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblNewsDetail">NEW YORK: The amount of gun violence in movies rated PG-13 has more than tripled over the last two decades, says a new study.<br /><br />When
 PG-13 first became a designation, movies with that rating had similar 
amounts of gun violence as G and PG films, researchers found. Now, they 
sometimes have more shooting scenes than R-rated movies.<br /><br />"It 
doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out there are going to be 
disturbed kids who are going to see this kind of content," said Daniel 
Romer.<br /><br />"The problem for parents is they can no longer rely on the
 PG-13 rating to tell them there isn't a lot of violence in those 
films," he added.<br /><br />Romer worked on the new study at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center in Philadelphia.<br /><br />The
 researchers watched 945 movies sampled from the 30 top-grossing films 
each year between 1950 and 2012. They marked every time a film had a 
violent sequence, and each time that involved a gun that was fired.<br /><br />Their findings were published Monday in Pediatrics.<br /><br />Across all films, the number of violent sequences more than doubled during the study period, the researchers found.<br /><br />Gun-related violence held steady in R-rated movies and declined slightly in G and PG movies since 1985.<br /><br />But
 the rate of gun violence in PG-13 movies jumped from less than one 
shooting sequence per hour in films released in 1985 - the first full 
year of the PG-13 designation - to almost three per hour in 2012 movies.<br /><br />Romer told Reuters Health past evidence suggests seeing weapons in use can make people have more aggressive thoughts.<br /><br />He
 said it's not clear why the Motion Picture Association of America 
(MPAA) has allowed more violence in PG-13 movies, but continues to be 
strict about keeping sex out of those films.<br /><br />According to a guide
 to ratings from the MPAA, "There may be depictions of violence in a 
PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent 
violence."<br /><br />The MPAA declined to comment on the new findings.<br /><br />Dr.
 James Sargent said the movie industry knows films make more money when 
they are rated PG-13, because adolescents are a profitable audience. 
Violence also makes money, he said - so the fact that more of it is 
showing up in PG-13 films "is no surprise."<br /><br />Sargent, from the 
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Norris Cotton Cancer 
Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, has studied media influences on youth 
but wasn't involved in the new study.<br /><br />The MPAA, he told Reuters 
Health, "need to go back to the drawing board and fix their rating 
system so those movies are rated R for violence."<br /><br />Not everyone agrees that gun violence in films targeted to young people is concerning, however.<br /><br />"It's
 probably true that gun violence in movies is higher than it was … but 
what does that mean? There's really not much in terms of, ‘so what?'" 
said Christopher Ferguson.<br /><br />Chair of the psychology department at 
Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, Ferguson has studied violence in 
the media but wasn't involved in the new research.<br /><br />"Youth 
violence is at its lowest level in 40 years," Ferguson told Reuters 
Health. "That happened as media violence has increased."<br /><br />"My 
concern is that we're distracting ourselves from more serious issues" 
that do affect violence among young people, he said. Those include 
problems with the mental health system, poverty and education 
disparities.<br /><br />Sargent agreed the evidence linking violence in 
movies to youth violence isn't as clear as the links between on-screen 
and real-life smoking and drinking, for instance.<br /><br />But he said that doesn't mean seeing gun violence doesn't affect adolescents.<br /><br />"We
 have a problem in this country. People are shooting each other at high 
rates," Sargent said. "We should be trying to address anything we can to
 decrease the rates of gun violence in the United States." REUTERS</span><br />

Pakistan, Kuwait sign 3 MoUs

ISLAMABAD  -  Pakistan and Kuwait signed three MOUs for 
promotion of cooperation in different fields. Interior Ministers of both
 the countries signed the agreement for exchange of prisoners.<br />

LB polls in Sindh on December 7: ECP sources

ISLAMABAD  - Election Commission of Pakistan has stated 
that local bodies’ elections in Sindh will be held on December 7.<br />

The ECP sources on Monday said that the decision has been taken in the light of the ruling of Supreme Court of Pakistan.<br />

According to Sindh Local Government Act 2013, the local bodies 
election in Sindh would be held on party basis while the members would 
be elected for four years.<br />

The number of members for each union council would be nine while 22 %
 seats would be reserved for women 5% for labourers and 5% for 
minorities.<br />

Earlier, The ECP had decided to hold the LB polls on November 27 
while the Sindh government pleaded in the court that it was difficult to
 hold local bodies elections in the province on 27th of this month due 
to Muharram holidays.<br />

The court said local bodies’ elections would be held on 7th of next 
month in Balochistan and Punjab provinces and if ECP considers feasible‚
 it can extend the date for Sindh province till 7th December.<br />

The court said holding local bodies elections was constitutional responsibility of provincial governments.<br />

PepsiCo to invest $5 billion in India

NEW DELHI (AFP) - US soft drinks giant PepsiCo announced Monday it 
would invest more than $5 billion with its partners in India to raise 
production, saying it had only "scratched the surface" of the Asian 
giant s potential.<br />

PepsiCo said the investment by 2020 in India, one of its largest 
markets globally, would strengthen its capabilities in such areas as 
manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture.<br />

"India is a country with huge potential and it remains an attractive,
 high-priority market for PepsiCo," said PepsiCo chairman Indra Nooyi.<br />

"We ve built a highly successful business in India over the course of
 many years, and we believe we ve only scratched the surface of the 
long-term growth opportunities that exist for PepsiCo," she said. "This 
investment is PepsiCo s vote of confidence in India s future," she said 
in a statement.<br />

The announcement is welcome news for the embattled Congress-led 
government, which has been struggling to attract foreign direct 
investment in the face of corruption scandals, a weakening rupee and 
slowing economic growth.<br />

PepsiCo and its bottling partners aim to more than double production 
capacity in India by 2020. They currently have some 38 bottling plants 
and three food plants in the country.<br />

Last year rival Coca-Cola Co said it would spend $5 billion in India over the next seven years to increase its operations.<br />

PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are competing to woo consumers in emerging 
markets including India and other parts of Asia, as well as the Middle 
East and Africa.<br />

India s increasingly affluent population of 1.2 billion is attracting
 global consumer companies despite the need to overcome bureaucracy and 
other hurdles.<br />

Katy Perry, Eminem triumph as MTV rises to Google challenge

(Reuters) - Katy Perry won the award for best female singer at the 
2013 MTV EMA music awards on Sunday, pipping Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus 
to the post in MTV's first award ceremony since the launch a week ago of
 the upstart YouTube Music Awards.<br />

But Cyrus stole the show by lighting what could have been a joint, in
 a nod to the host city's famously tolerant attitude towards soft drugs.<br />

She had earlier been photographed in one of Amsterdam's best-known coffeeshops where soft drugs are on the menu.<br />

With the three pop divas in contention, the prize for best female was
 the most closely watched battle at the Viacom-owned music network's 
20th annual European awards ceremony.<br />

Claiming her third EMA award, U.S. singer Perry gave a dramatic 
rendition of her song "Unconditionally", suspended like a sequin-covered
 glitter ball 9 meters (30 feet) above a gigantic outer-space-themed 
set.<br />

"It's my goal to get (my music) to as many ears as possible," she 
said on the red carpet before the show. "If that's happening, I'm 
happy."<br />

When Cyrus picked up her best video award for "Wrecking Ball", she 
made a show of not finding the space for the bauble in her handbag.<br />

"You know I couldn't fit this award in my bag but I did find this," 
she said, pulling out a hand-rolled cigarette which she lit as she 
walked off the stage.<br />

Earlier, the former Disney star, who caused a sensation with her 
raunchy "twerking" performance with actor Robin Thicke at the U.S.-based
 Video Music Awards in August, took to the red carpet in a bold mini 
dress on which the words "Please Stop Violence" were wrapped tightly 
around her hip.<br />

British-Irish boy band One Direction had a good night, taking the 
prize for best pop, while Harry Styles, known as much for his singing in
 the band as for his celebrity girlfriends, was awarded best style.<br />

Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto reacted to his band's 
winning the best alternative prize by calling for a minute of silence 
for those affected by typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines on 
Friday, killing an estimated 10,000 people. The call went largely 
unheeded.<br />

"It's hard to hear in there ... but the message is what's important, 
to send some love and support across the world," he said backstage 
afterwards.<br />

Justin Bieber held on to his best male status for a fourth 
consecutive year, while Beyonce and Bruno Mars won awards for best live 
act and best song, respectively. China's Chris Lee won best worldwide 
act.<br />

NEW COMPETITION<br />

U.S. rapper Eminem was given a "Global Icon" prize for lifetime 
achievement along with best hip-hop, just a week after being declared 
artist of the year at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards, run by 
emerging music industry rival Google.<br />

In the face of the new competition, the MTV EMA awards are being seen
 as a test of the ability of MTV, one of the most prominent brands of 
the 1980s and 1990s, to flourish in the internet era.<br />

Robert Bakish, head of Viacom's broadcast division, said he was confident the company would rise to the challenge.<br />

While MTV has dominated the field with its annual pop music awards 
since 1984, when the Video Music Awards were launched, video-sharing 
site YouTube, with its one billion viewers a month, has utterly remade 
the popular music business.<br />

"There's always competition, traditional competition and new 
competition," Bakish told Reuters on the red carpet before the show.<br />

"The EMA is the ultimate multiplatform expression, we combine live television with digital and on Web and on mobile," he said.<br />

Lady Gaga lends image to USA Today logo

NEW YORK (AP) - Lady Gaga is lending some of her artistic eye and 
star power to USA Today s pages in advance of the singer s new album, 
"ARTPOP."<br />

USA Today says a logo featuring an image of a statue of the pop 
provocateur will appear in Monday s editions of the newspaper s "LIFE" 
section.<br />

The newspaper says Lady Gaga is the first guest contributor to design a logo for the newspaper.<br />

The logo was designed in collaboration with the performer and artist 
Jeff Koons, who designed Lady Gaga s cover art for "ARTPOP," due out 
Tuesday.<br />

The album is Lady Gaga s third release.<br />

The singer has sold nearly 9 million albums on her way to becoming one of music s more colorful figures.<br />

The "Applause" singer unveiled a high-tech, white vehicle she calls 
the world's first flying dress. The contraption lifted her inside a 
mammoth building in New York City, where she held a launch party for her
 new album Sunday.<br />

The 27-year-old New York entertainer said this was "maybe a small 
step for Volantis" as she calls the battery-powered metal dress but "a 
big-time step" for Lady Gaga.<br />

She says her ultimate goal is to stage the first musical performance from space.<br />

Her third studio album, "Artpop," will be released worldwide Monday.<br />

Criscito, Parolo called up for Italy friendlies

MILAN (AFP) - Zenit Saint Petersburg defender Domenico Criscito is 
among the few fresh faces in Italy s squad announced by Cesare Prandelli
 for upcoming friendlies against Germany and Nigeria.<br />

Criscito makes the Azzurri squad for the first time since October 
2012, although months earlier he was excluded, prior to Euro 2012, for 
his alleged role in the  Calcioscommesse  match-fixing affair.<br />

Criscito faced no charges and was later cleared of any wrong-doing. 
His call-up comes in the absence of Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini 
due to injury.<br />

Italy, who qualified for next year s World Cup in Brazil with two 
games two spare, will also be without injured Paris Saint Germain 
midfielder Marco Verratti.<br />

Prandelli has called up Parma s Marco Parolo for only the second

Defiant Federer upbeat despite year to forget

LONDON (AFP) - Roger Federer insists tennis is in his DNA and that he
 has no intention of quitting after his worst season came to a downbeat 
conclusion with a semi-final defeat against Rafael Nadal at the ATP 
World Tour Finals.<br />

Federer has endured a dismal campaign marred by a series of shock 
defeats and the 17-time Grand Slam champion was unable to finish on a 
high note as world number one Nadal sent him crashing out of the 
season-ending event with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on Sunday.<br />

After reigning over men s tennis for the best part of a decade, the 
32-year-old is undeniably a fading force, prompting some to suggest he 
may consider hanging up his racquet to focus on life as a father of twin
 daughters.<br />

But Federer is adamant that is not an option just yet because his love of the sport remains too strong.<br />

"For me, it s pretty simple: this is what I used to do as a little 
boy. It s something that always is there in your DNA," Federer said.<br />

"Clearly today it s different than when I was 12 years old, but it s just something I enjoy doing.<br />

"The thing is that when you stop, you re still so young that why stop
 so early? Why just walk away from it because I have many other things 
to do in my life than play tennis, but because I can still choose, I 
pick to play.<br />

"As long as I have this choice, I ll keep on playing."<br />

Federer, troubled by a back injury in the first half of the campaign,
 claims his lack of success over the last 11 months is more down to his 
body failing him than a lack of hunger.<br />

"Considering the back issues I ve had, I m pleased that I m pain-free
 for a long period of time now with a lot of tennis," he said.<br />

"That s definitely going to give me confidence physically and mentally.<br />

"Just beating two top-10 players recently (Richard Gasquet and Juan 
Martin del Potro) is a good thing for me after not having beaten any for
 almost seven or eight months."<br />

For Federer, the joy of competing against the best keeps him coming 
back for more, but in 2013 he failed to reach a Grand Slam final for the
 first time since 2002 and won only a solitary title in Halle as his 
ranking slumped to seventh in the world -- his lowest placing for 11 
years.<br />

His decline has been impossible to hide even at the venues where he has traditionally been regarded as virtually unbeatable.<br />

Federer arrived at Wimbledon as defending champion and exited humbled by a defeat against world number 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky.<br />

Then at the Tour Finals, where he has been the winner six times and a
 finalist for the last three years, Federer suffered a first ever loss 
to Nadal in an indoor tournament and a 22nd career defeat in 32 meetings
 with the Spaniard.<br />

But still the Swiss star sounded a defiant note as he claimed he 
would take encouragement from the way he finished the year with an 
appearance in the Basel final and runs to the last four in Paris and 
London.<br />

"I m more positive now looking ahead than I would have been a few 
months ago where I wasn t quite sure what to expect after the US Open," 
Federer said.<br />

"I think something good is possible for next year. It was a stronger 
finish than I thought it was going to be in Basel, Paris and London.<br />

"I m back confident and excited going into the off-season and starting again next year.<br />

"The rankings are secondary for me. I need to make sure I stay competitive and can hang with the best.<br />

"Clearly the Grand Slams are going to be part of my highlights in 2014 and I m hoping to make sure I play my best there."<br />

Barcelona loses Messi but cruises to win at Betis

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Barcelona lost Lionel Messi to another leg 
injury but still had more than enough firepower to win 4-1 at struggling
 Real Betis and capitalize on a stumble by title rival Atletico Madrid 
on Sunday.<br />

Things looked grim for the defending champions when Messi suffered 
his third leg injury of the season and asked to be substituted in the 
21st minute, as Barcelona came under pressure.<br />

But Cesc Fabregas stepped in by scoring two goals and making another 
in a convincing victory before he was replaced late in the match due to 
pain in his right knee.<br />

"We started without any intensity and they were rolling over us for 
the first 20-25 minutes," Fabregas said. "But then we had a good 20 
minutes before dominating in the second half."<br />

Fabregas, who has started nine of Barca s 13 league matches and 
appeared particularly put out at not being chosen to start Wednesday s 
Champions League win over AC Milan, made it clear he wants to prove his 
worth to coach Gerard Martino.<br />

"I know the starting 11 that my coach has in his head and that I am 
not in it," Fabregas said. "I will work as much as I can to erase any 
doubts."<br />

Barcelona said Messi and Fabregas would undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of their injuries.<br />

Goalkeeper Victor Valdes made two superb saves to deny Jorge Molina 
before Fabregas set up Neymar for Barcelona s 35th-minute opener.<br />

Pedro Rodriguez made it 2-0 two minutes later with a solo effort that
 left Betis  defense in tatters, and Fabregas finished off the scoring 
for Barcelona in the 63rd and the 79th.<br />

Barcelona s 12th win in 13 rounds kept it undefeated and lifted it 
three points clear of second-place Atletico after it was held to a 1-1 
draw at Villarreal earlier.<br />

Messi, who appeared to be back to his old self after scoring a double
 on Wednesday against AC Milan in the Champions League, hurt a muscle in
 his left thigh while sprinting and was replaced by Andres Iniesta.<br />

"No doubt we will have to talk to Leo so that this third injury 
doesn t worry him and affect him mentally," Barcelona coach Gerardo 
Martino said.<br />

Last-place Betis had already tested Valdes by the time Messi went 
off, but the Spain goalie continued his excellent season by denying 
Molina one-one-one, and moments later leaping to turn away the striker s
 header at the far post.<br />

Having regrouped after losing Messi, Alex Song met Fabregas  run with
 a weighted pass that left him free to cross for the unmarked Neymar, 
who scored his fourth league goal of the season.<br />

Pedro then raced onto a high ball in midfield, knocked it beyond 
Betis  last line of defense, and collected it before looping a shot 
beyond goalkeeper Guillermo Sara.<br />

Betis  Joan Verdu went close and Jose "Nono" Delgado hit the woodwork
 as the hosts tried to react after halftime. But coach Pepe Mel s 
insistence on pushing his defensive line up the pitch proved fatal.<br />

Neymar had threatened twice on the break before Iniesta lobbed the 
ball wide to Martin Montoya, who had three Barcelona players to cross to
 in the area against one Betis defender.<br />

Montoya chose Fabregas to tap in his first goal before the former 
Arsenal midfielder nodded Dani Alves  pass off the turf and the upright 
before it trickled over the goalline. Three minutes later, Fabregas left
 the match.<br />

"We tried to make long passes behind their defense to look for the 
open spaces they were leaving, and I think we took full advantage of 
them," said Pedro.<br />

Molina finally beat Valdes from the penalty spot for Betis  
consolation goal in stoppage time after Dani Alves fouled Javier Matilla
 in the box.<br />

Atletico went ahead just two minutes into the match at El Madrigal 
Stadium when Juanfran Torres broke free on the right flank and swung in a
 cross that defender Mario Perez turned into his own net while trying to
 fend off Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion.<br />

Atletico held Villarreal s passing attack in check until coach Marcelino Garcia sent on striker Jeremy Perbet.<br />

Five minutes later Perbet provided the missing spark when he 
collected the ball from a throw-in, dribbled into the area and provided a
 square pass that Juanfran ended up poking into his own goal while 
jostling with Villarreal s Ikechukwu Uche.<br />

Villarreal remained in fourth place, but seven points behind Real Madrid in third.<br />

Earlier, Sevilla beat Espanyol 3-1 to end a 22-game winless run away 
from home in the league, while Valencia was held to a 2-2 draw by

Sevilla got the much-needed victory thanks to goals from Federico

Nigeria's youngsters promise bright future

ABUJA, Nov 11, 2013 (AFP) - The future looks bright 
for Nigerian football after the country s young stars won the FIFA 
Under-17 World Cup for the fourth time, underlining their strength at 
youth level.
The Eaglets romped to a convincing 3-0 victory over defending 
champions Mexico in Abu Dhabi on Friday, prompting praise from President
 Goodluck Jonathan and sending the football-mad country into raptures.<br />

"They (the team) are the future of Nigerian football," said coach 
Manu Garba, who was assistant coach when the team won the tournament in 
2007.<br />

Stand-out stars included Kelechi Iheanacho, who was named best player
 after scoring six goals, including four against Mexico in the group 
stages.<br />

Iheanacho, an intelligent, skilful player with a magical left foot, 
is said to have already attracted the eye of several of Europe s top 
clubs, among them Arsenal.<br />

Skipper Musa Muhammed is also seen as an exciting prospect, having 
scored three goals from right-back position, while Dele Alampasu was 
named best goalkeeper in the competition.<br />

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, who steered the Super Eagles senior team
 to Africa Cup of Nations glory earlier this year, has tipped several 
players in the side to make the grade at the top level.<br />

"I was impressed with (strikers) Isaac Success and (Taiwo) Awoniyi. 
They are young and will soon hit it big in this game," he said.<br />
"They have the qualities to earn their places in the senior team in the future."<br />

Keshi has a track record of nurturing home-grown talent rather than 
relying on big name foreign-based stars and made a point of selecting as
 many local players as possible during their successful CAF campaign.<br />

True to form, he said he was not going to introduce the young players
 too soon, effectively ruling out the appearance of some of the under-17
 side in his squad for Brazil, should the Super Eagles overcome Ethiopia
 on Saturday.<br />

Nigeria are 2-1 up from the first leg going in to the return fixture in the southern city of Calabar.<br />

Instead, former Togo and Mali boss Keshi said he preferred the youngsters to rise through the ranks.<br />

"I will want the players to take the natural route of maturity, play 
for the Flying Eagles (under-20 team), then maybe the under-23s and then
 we can start looking at them," he explained.<br />

"During that period we may find one or two of them that can make 
impact in the national team and we will not hesitate to invite them."<br />

Several of Nigeria s most famous footballers, such as former Arsenal 
great Nwankwo Kanu, Chelsea s Celestine Babayaro and John Mikel Obi, 
plus Victor Ikpeba, started out as schoolboy stars.<br />

As such, there are increasing calls for the under-17s to be given 
their chance early in senior football at the highest level, rather than 
spend too long in Nigeria s domestic league.<br />

"If you are good enough, you re old enough and so I expect Keshi to 
have a look at some of these youngsters before long," said Pius Ayinor, 
sports editor at Nigerian daily The Punch.<br />

But former international Garba Lawal maintained that Nigeria should 
not get carried away by the under-17 triumph and instead should be 
managed gradually until they are good enough to play at full 
international level.<br />

"Without any doubt they are good players but their development must 
be gradual. We must not rush them because their level is very different 
from being a full international," the former midfielder added.<br />

World doping conference starts in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - The World Conference on Doping in Sport starts 
Tuesday in Johannesburg, where it will consider a new anti-doping code 
and is expected to confirm the global doping policing body s next 
president.<br />

World sports leaders will converge at the Sandton Convention Centre 
for the four-day meeting amid frosty relations between the World 
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and international sporting bodies.<br />

The conference will discuss the final draft of the third World 
Anti-Doping Code, which tightens punishment for transgressors and 
fine-tunes tests as doping scandals continue.<br />

Less than one percent of doping checks give an abnormal result, 
though tests have jumped from 150,000 a year to 250,000 since WADA s 
creation in 1999.<br />

Notwithstanding the tests, cyclist Lance Armstrong escaped detection 
for years, while former 100-meter sprint stars, Jamaican Asafa Powell 
and America s Tyson Gay, tested positive for banned substances this 
year.<br />

The new code will extend bans for caught-out dopers from two years to

The rules will also target support staff who conspire with sports 
people to use banned substances, and fine-tune testing according to the 
different sporting codes.<br />

A WADA report in June blamed a lack of will for the relative few 
doping cases that are caught. The problem lay not with modern science, 
which is completely up to the challenge, the report found.<br />

The conference will no doubt also discuss situations in Jamaica, Brazil and Kenya.<br />

Besides Powell four others from the Caribbean island were also caught
 doping this year, and a report is upcoming after a WADA team audited 
the country s national doping agency last month.<br />

In August the agency revoked the accreditation of Rio de Janeiro, 
which will host the 2014 World Cup final and the summer Olympics in

WADA declared that the laboratory did not comply with international standards.<br />

Meanwhile Kenyan authorities have been dragging their feet to investigate allegations of doping amongst its athletes.<br />

But WADA s accusatory tone with sporting bodies has come under fire notably from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).<br />

Sport federations want it to play a more active role in performing 
anti-doping tests, as opposed to merely playing the schoolteacher that 
polices the code.<br />

But WADA complains it is expected to do ever more with a budget of 
only $28 million. The conference will also most likely confirm incoming 
president Craig Reedie s appointment.<br />

The IOC designated him in August to head the global doping agency, 
ahead of other runners the IOC s former medical chief Patrick Schamasch 
from France and American 400-metre hurdles legend Ed Moses.<br />

The 72-year-old Scotsman served on London s 2012 Olympics organising 
committee and has been an IOC vice-president since last year.<br />

Sports organisations will welcome Reedie as one of their own, after 
six years under outgoing president John Fahey, a former Australian 
finance minister.<br />

The office rotates between representatives of governments and international sports federations, who together fund WADA.<br />

If confirmed, Reedie will be WADA s third president after Fahey and 
first leader the straight-talking Dick Pound, who served from 1999 to

Ibrahimovic was nominated for his long-range bicycle kick for Sweden

Egypt: Drive-by shooting kills 2 soldiers

CAIRO (AP) Egypt s state news agency says a drive-by shooting on a 
desert road in the country s north has killed two soldiers and wounded

Monday s report by MENA says the attack took place on the road to the
 Suez Canal city of Ismailia, when gunmen from a speeding car opened 
fire at a military checkpoint on Sunday evening.<br />

A similar checkpoint attack last week in Ismailia also killed two 
soldiers. The city is 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of the Egyptian 
capital, Cairo.<br />

A militant group calling itself Ansar Beit al-Maqdis Arabic for 
Partisans of Jerusalem has been active in the area, attacking military 
and police targets. The group also claimed responsibility for last

Greek govt wins vote, gets majority cut by 1 seat

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greece s coalition government won a confidence 
vote Monday called by the left-wing opposition but saw its parliamentary
 majority cut by one seat.<br />

Socialist deputy Theodora Tzakri was expelled from the party after 
refusing to back Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras  
15-month-old government in the vote held in the 300-seat parliament 
early Monday.<br />

Samaras saw his support cut to 154 deputies, just three above the minimum required, after Tzakri was declared an independent.<br />

Samaras formed the coalition after the June 2012 election and has 
pushed through unpopular austerity measures demanded by international 
lenders in return for the country s 240 billion-euro ($322-billion) 
bailout.<br />

Tzakri, a 43-year-old former deputy interior minister, accused the 
government of planning deeper austerity cuts in a country that is 
already reeling from unemployment, job cuts and higher taxes.<br />

"The Greek people are being wiped out by constant cuts and taxes, 
prospects of growth are being put off, and the government s only concern
 is how it will sell another round of taxes and cuts to the public," 
Tzakri said in a statement.<br />

The government is currently in talks with bailout inspectors to try 
and reach a deal on long-term spending cuts ahead of a Nov. 21 deadline 
for submitting the 2014 budget to parliament.<br />

The government won the no-confidence vote Monday 153-124 after Tzakri
 abstained and a conservative lawmaker was absent, citing illness.<br />

Iran rejects nuclear deal: Kerry

ABU DHABI (AP) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that 
the major powers were unified on an Iran nuclear deal during weekend 
talks in Geneva but the Iranians were unable to accept it. He also said 
critics of the diplomatic effort should withhold their comments until a 
deal is reached.<br />

Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, Kerry said the United States and 
its negotiating partners were unified when the proposal was presented to
 the Iranians.<br />

"The French signed off on it, we signed off on it," Kerry said.<br />

Earlier reports said that the talks came apart because France refused
 to accept the deal with Iran. On Monday, Kerry said the major powers 
reached an agreement after a marathon bargaining session but Iran wasn t
 able to accept the deal "at that particular moment."<br />

"There was unity but Iran couldn t take it," he said.<br />

Kerry also said that that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu s
 rejection of a deal to limit Iran s nuclear ambitions was premature.<br />
"The time to oppose it is when you see what it is, not to oppose the effort to find out what is possible," Kerry said.<br />

Netanyahu has repeatedly criticized what he considers readiness by 
the six powers involved in the talks to be too generous to Iran and has 
aggressively campaigned against an agreement.<br />

But Kerry reasserted the U.S. commitment to Israel, saying the United States would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear bomb.<br />

President Barack Obama, Kerry said, "does what he says," citing the 
killing of Osama bin Laden and getting American troops out of the wars 
in Iraq and Afghanistan.<br />

"So believe us on Iran," he said. "He will not bluff."<br />

Kerry said the U.S. has "been meeting constantly" with the Israelis 
to understand the progress Iran has made in its nuclear program. "We are
 confident that what we are doing can actually protect Israel more 
effectively and provide greater security," he said.<br />

Kerry said there is no "end game" in motion and the Geneva talks were a first step in longer process of possible give and take.<br />

Tehran has been eager to reach an agreement to ease international 
sanctions that have halted most oil exports and crippled the county s 
economy.<br />

But a key stumbling block has been Iran s insistence that the 
international community recognize its "right" to enrich uranium as a 
signer of a U.N. treaty governing the spread of nuclear technology also 
frequently pointing out that Israel has not signed the accord. Kerry s 
comments challenge the Iranian view, but do not appear to significantly 
alter the currently Western effort that seeks to curb Iran s ability to 
make its highest-enrich uranium but possibly leaving intact the 
country s production of lower-level nuclear fuel.<br />

Iran s highest enrichment level, at 20 percent, is still below the 
more than 90 percent needed for weapons-grade material, but experts say 
the process could be done at a rapid pace. Iran insists that its nuclear
 program is solely for peaceful purposes and that it has no plans to 
produce a nuclear weapon.<br />

Iran says the 20 percent material is needed for its research reactor,
 which makes medical isotopes for cancer treatment and other 
applications. Iran also produces lower level nuclear fuel for its 
energy-producing reactor, which requires 3.5 percent enriched uranium.<br />

Iranian state TV reported Monday that an agreement for expanded 
monitoring had been reached in talks with the U.N. nuclear chief in a 
deal that could boost wider negotiations over Tehran s atomic program.<br />

Abu Dhabi was Kerry s final stop on a lengthy visit to the Middle 
East. He interrupted his tour on Friday to rush to Switzerland to take 
part in the weekend negotiations with Iran. He was expected back in 
Washington late Monday.<br />

Five killed in Iraq attacks, two dead bodies found

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Attacks north of Baghdad killed five people on 
Monday, officials said, while police found two corpses bearing signs of 
torture, a scene reminiscent of the country s all-out sectarian war.<br />

The violence comes ahead of annual Shiite Muslim religious 
commemorations, when Sunni militants often mount attacks, and as Iraq 
grapples with continuing bloodshed despite wide-ranging operations 
targeting insurgents and tightened security.<br />

The spike in unrest has spurred Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to 
appeal for greater cooperation with the United States in combatting 
militancy, and on Sunday Turkey offered to help as well.<br />

In the northern city of Mosul, three separate shootings killed one 
soldier, wounded another and left two civilians dead, police and medical
 officials said.<br />

Near the University of Mosul, a taxi driver was killed when a magnetic "sticky" bomb was attached to his car.<br />

Elsewhere in the city, police found the body of a soldier in the 
Tigris river. The soldier had been kidnapped the previous day, and had 
suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, execution-style, and his 
body bore signs of torture.<br />

In Salaheddin province, north of Baghdad, police found another corpse
 bearing signs of torture, including some fingers having been cut off.<br />

During the worst of Iraq s Sunni-Shiite sectarian war in 2006 and 
2007 bodies were regularly found in major rivers and along main roads, 
bearing signs of torture.<br />

Meanwhile in the restive Diyala province, gunmen assassinated a local
 official from the Ministry of Water Resources. The bloodshed is part of
 the country s worst unrest since 2008.<br />

In addition to major security problems, authorities have failed to 
provide adequate basic services such as electricity and clean water, and
 corruption is widespread.<br />

Political squabbling has paralysed the government, while parliament has passed almost no major legislation in years.<br />

More time needed on Iran nuclear deal: diplomat

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Talks between global powers and Iran that broke up 
this weekend without a deal on Tehran s disputed nuclear drive were 
"definitely no failure", a senior Western diplomat familiar with the 
issue said Monday.<br />

There was "no breakthrough yet but definitely no failure," said the 
diplomat on condition of anonymity, speaking after the negotiations 
between Iran and P5+1 powers -- Britain, France, the United States, 
Russia and China plus Germany.<br />

"The collective assessment of the group was that some more time would
 still be needed; that was not just the assessment of the French," the 
source added, referring to reports in some quarters blaming France for 
holding up a deal.<br />

The talks were "very intensive, very complex, very detailed and 
constructive," the diplomat added, saying that an agreement to return to
 the negotiating table as early as next week "shows how serious we 
are." It was "crucial to keep momentum," the source said.<br />

In the latest marathon round of the years-long talks, hopes of 
finally reaching a deal soared after foreign ministers from the P5+1 
powers rushed to the Swiss city to join the meeting at the weekend.<br />

When it ended inconclusively some laid the blame on France, whose 
Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius raised concerns over a heavy water 
reactor being built at Arak, an issue which was introduced into the 
negotiations recently by global powers.<br />

At least a year from being completed, the Arak reactor is a source of
 concern for Western powers who fear the plutonium it will produce as a 
by-product could provide Iran with a second route for making fissile 
material for an atom bomb.<br />

Iran says it solely wants to produce isotopes for medical and agricultural purposes.<br />

The other source of concern is Tehran s enrichment of uranium to 20 
percent, a few technical steps away from making weapons-grade matter.<br />

Global powers want to see a freeze in Iran s nuclear programme in 
return for lifting some of the sanctions they say are biting hard into 
the country s economy.<br />

Speaking Monday in Abu Dhabi, US Secretary of State John Kerry accused Iran of walking away from a deal at the Geneva talks.<br />

"The P5+1 was unified on Saturday when we presented our proposal to 
the Iranians... But Iran couldn t take it, at that particular moment 
they weren t able to accept," said Kerry.<br />

Khan said that no progress can be made until an end to US drone strikes.<br />

He said that Pakistan is passing through a delicate phase requiring 
complete unanimity of views and consensus on the strategy to deal with 
the challenge of terrorism and violence.<br />

Speaking on a motion moved in the National Assembly about recent 
drone attacks in North Waziristan Agency‚ the interior minister said 
conflicting interests are at work and it is duty of the parliamentarians
 to safeguard interest of the country.<br />

He cautioned that there are enemies as well as friends like enemies 
that are advancing their own agenda in a cloak and dagger game.<br />

The minister expressed satisfaction that during debate in the House 
there was wide consensus that the dialogue process should continue and 
the drone strikes should come to an end in any case.<br />

The Interior Minister said the government was sincerely working to 
make the dialogue process a success and the other side too wanted formal
 talks.<br />

He clarified that despite provocative actions like killing of senior 
army officers‚ the armed forces contributed fully to ensure conducive 
atmosphere for holding of dialogue. He said Pakistan Army was fully on 
board in the dialogue process.<br />

The Interior Minister regretted that a highly damaging debate on who is a martyr has begun targeting the Pakistan Army.<br />

He rejected the allegation that Pakistan Army was acting at the behest of the United States in the war against terror.<br />
He pointed out that Pakistan has good working relations with Karzai 
government and the United States has been seeking Pakistan support for 
establishing contact with Afghan Taliban.<br />

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will be visiting Afghanistan next month for talks with Afghan President.<br />

Nisar said Pakistan government and agencies have no favourites in 
Afghanistan and only want that the reconciliation process should be 
Afghan-led and Afghan-owned.<br />

The Minister said previously a suggestion was made that Pakistan 
should talk separately to each group but this proposition was not 
entertained as it would have created an impression that the government 
was trying to create rift among Taliban.<br />

The Interior Minister categorically stated that the dialogue process 
cannot move forward if drone attacks continued. He said Pakistan has 
conveyed its concern to the United States and their reaction has been 
shared with the parliamentary leaders. He said there would be more 
debate on the issue during the next two days.<br />

Giving background of the process‚ Ch. Nisar Ali Khan said on the 
basis of evidence as to who was behind attack on a Church in Peshawar 
and other places‚ the other side was told that no formal delegation 
would be sent until and unless bomb blasts are stopped.<br />

The minister said that drone strike was a serious setback to the 
peace process but we will have to review the situation during the next 
four to six weeks to pick up the pieces again.<br />

He said there are people on the other side as well who still believe in the dialogue process.<br />

The interior minster said there should be no doubt that the 
government and the political parties are fully resolved to defend every 
inch of Pakistan and its frontiers and provide security to citizens.<br />

IHC declares Ogra's ex-chief Sadiq's sentence null and void

ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court declared former Oil
 and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) chief Tauqir Sadiq's three-year 
sentence null and void on Monday.<br />

A hearing was presented in front of a two-member bench, which, after 
evidence was presented by both sides, voided Sadiq’s sentence. His 
request for bail was subsequently also dismissed.<br />

Sadiq was the main accused in the Rs82 billion scam and, according to
 an interim reference provided by NAB, had provided undue financial 
relief to firms and individuals and issued licences for CNG stations on 
bogus documents.<br />

On May 7, a court in Rawalpindi had given Sadiq a three-year sentence
 for non-attendance in court. The NAB prosecuter argued that Sadiq had 
fled to Dubai and according to NAB Ordinance Clause 31, he could be 
tried for non-attendance.<br />

Sadiq’s advocate said that his client was charged based on false 
statements after National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials brought 
him back to Pakistan from Dubai.<br />

Advocate Sardar Asmatullah had maintained in his client’s bail 
application that he was put behind bars while NAB had failed to produce 
any substantial proof. He had argued that his client had remained in 
custody for more than 60 days and the authorities had failed to recover 
anything from his possession.<br />

According to NAB’s interim reference, Ogra Member (Gas) Mansoor 
Muzaffer Ali, Member (Finance) Kamal Farid Bijarani and Chairman’s Staff
 Officer Jawad Jameel were also involved in the scam.<br />

On November 25 last year, the apex court had struck down Sadiq’s 
appointment as Ogra chairman.  He had fled the country and NAB officials
 had brought him back to Pakistan on July 9, 2013. He was kept at the 
bureau’s headquarters and produced for the first time in court in July. <br />

China's FAW to produce 10,000 vehicles per year in Algeria

ALGIERS (AFP) - Chinese state manufacturer FAW is to build an 
assembly plant in Algeria producing 10,000 vehicles per year under an 
agreement signed with Arcofina, the private Algerian firm Arcofina told 
AFP.<br />

The agreement provides for an initial investment of five billion 
dinars ($61 million, 46 million euros), and Arcofina CEO Abdelouahab 
Rahim said that the figure will rise. <br />

To conform with Algerian law, Arcofina will own 51 percent of the 
plant and FAW 49 percent, with the aim of reducing the Chinese 
manufacturer's share to 40 percent after three years, Rahim said at the 
signing of the protocol. <br />

He said it was an opportunity that "there are two manufacturers 
setting up at the same time" in Algeria, referring to Renault which in 
September began construction of a car plant in the western region of 
Oran.<br />

Renault had asked for a production monopoly in the country for at least three years, which was rejected.<br />

Launched in 1953, FAW employs 130,000 people worldwide producing buses, cars and lorries.<br />

In 2012, it had a turnover of $61 billion, according to company figures.<br />

World sends emergency aid to Philippine

MANILA (AFP) - The United States, Australia and the United Nations 
are mobilising emergency aid to the Philippines as the scale of the 
devastation unleashed by Super Typhoon Haiyan emerges.<br />

The Pentagon is sending military personnel and equipment to assist 
with the relief effort following the typhoon, which may have killed more
 than 10,000 people in what is feared to be the country s worst natural 
disaster.<br />

"The United States is already providing significant humanitarian 
assistance, and we stand ready to further assist the government s relief
 and recovery efforts," US President Barack Obama said in a statement.<br />

Some 90 Marines and sailors, and two KC-130J Hercules aircraft, left 
Japan for the Philippines on Saturday, with equipment including 
tilt-rotor aircraft which can operate without runways, Marines Colonel 
John Peck said.<br />

The Australian government pledged Aus$10 million dollars (US$9.38 
million), with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop describing the unfolding 
tragedy as "absolutely devastating" and on a "massive scale".<br />

The sum includes Aus$4 million towards a UN global appeal and Aus$3 
million for Australian non-government organisations. The aid will 
include tarpaulins, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, water containers and 
health and hygiene kits.<br />

A team of Australian medics will leave on Wednesday via a C17 
military transport plane from Darwin to join disaster experts already on
 the ground, the government said, after it disbursed emergency funds 
worth US$490,000 on Sunday.<br />

Philippine rescue teams were said to be overwhelmed in their efforts 
to help those whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed after Haiyan 
ravaged large swathes of the archipelago Friday.<br />

Officials were struggling to cope with the scale of death and 
destruction, with reports of violent looters and scarcity of food, 
drinking water and shelter.<br />

United Nations leader Ban Ki-moon promised UN humanitarian agencies would "respond rapidly to help people in need".<br />

The UN children s fund UNICEF said a cargo plane carrying 60 tonnes 
of aid including shelters and medicine would arrive in the Philippines 
Tuesday, to be followed by deliveries of water purification and 
sanitation equipment.<br />

Pope Francis led 60,000 people in Sunday prayers for the Philippines,
 urging the faithful to provide "concrete help" to the largely Roman 
Catholic country.<br />

"Sadly, there are many, many victims and the damage is huge," he said.<br />

Other aid mobilised for the Philippines includes:<br />

-- The European Commission said it would give three million euros ($4 million) towards the relief efforts.<br />

-- Britain offered an emergency support package worth $9.6 million. 
Germany s embassy in Manila said an initial shipment of 23 tonnes of aid
 was being flown in and German rescue teams were already at work.<br />

-- Like Australia, New Zealand also increased its humanitarian relief
 on Monday, bringing its total to NZ$2.15 million (US$1.78 million), 
while Canada has promised up to US$5 million to aid organisations.<br />

-- Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) said it was 
sending 200 tonnes of aid including medicine, tents and hygiene kits to 
arrive mid-week, with the first cargo plane leaving from Dubai on Monday
 and another from Belgium on Tuesday.<br />

-- Taiwan s government pledged immediate cash aid of US$200,000 and the Singapore government donated US$40,000.<br />

-- Oxfam, the British-based relief organisation, said it has sent an assessment team ahead of aid operations.<br />

ECP seeks 4 months for LB polls preparations

 The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has filed a petition in the 
Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) to grant four months duration for the 
preparations of local bodies elections in the country on Monday, Geo 
News reported.<br />
According to the petition, the ECP has sought 
an extension of four months from the apex court to arrange local bodies 
polls in the country. <br />
It was requested in the petition to give 
time till March 2014 for the requisite arrangements for the upcoming 
local bodies elections in the country.<br />
The Supreme Court also 
approved a petition filed by the Sindh government in the Karachi 
registry of holding the local bodies elections in the province on 
December 7.<br />

MOSCOW (Agencies) - A 25-year-old Venezuelan television presenter and
 flamenco dancer, Gabriela Isler, has been crowned Miss Universe in 
Moscow in a glittering ceremony.<br />

According to foreign media reports, Judges, including rock star 
Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, picked the winner from a total of 86 
contestants.<br />

Last year s winner Olivia Culpo (who represented the United States) 
placed a diamond crown on the head of Isler, who wore a silver 
rhinestone studded evening dress.<br />

Isler s triumph was the seventh Miss Universe win for Venezuela, where beauty pageants are a major source of national pride.<br />

After the show, she beamed and waved to journalists, wearing the Miss
 Universe sash and standing next to the show s owner, US tycoon Donald 
Trump.<br />

"I feel a lot of emotions," she said.<br />

"I m still in shock. I feel so blessed, so happy to be here."<br />

"It s been a lot of fun and a great success," said Trump.<br />

In the decisive interview round that concludes the competition, Tyler
 asked Isler, who won Miss Venezuela last year, what her greatest fear 
was.<br />

She did not give any details, but said: "I believe we should overcome
 all our fears and this in turn will make us stronger," speaking in 
Spanish through an interpreter.<br />

Isler is now set to pose on Sunday in a specially created jewelled swimsuit that the organisers said was worth $1 million.<br />

The previous Miss Universe, Culpo, earlier appeared on stage wearing 
the white cutaway swimsuit studded with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.<br />

"That swimsuit travels with an armed security guard 24/7," commented co-host Thomas Roberts, an American television presenter.<br />

Roberts, who co-hosted the final with ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown, 
dedicated the show to the people suffering from the typhoon in the 
Philippines.<br />

"We send our very best, our thoughts. We dedicate tonight s show to you" he said.<br />

Sindh Assembly passes resolution against Munawar Hassan

against the controversial remarks made by chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Syed 
Munawar Hassan.<br />

“Anyone who does not condemn this statement is not a true Pakistani,” said PPP MPA Sharmila Faruqi in a statement to the media.<br />

Hassan had called the slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakimullah a ‘martyr.’<br />

Moreover, in a recent TV programme the JI chief had reportedly said 
that if an American who died on the battlefield was not a martyr, then 
his backers were also not martyrs because they were chasing the same 
goal. This was implicitly directed towards the Pakistan Army.<br />

ISLAMABAD  - The Opposition Leader in National Assembly 
Khursheed Shah met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday and assured his
 support to government over the future course of action with Taliban.<br />

During the meeting, both leaders discussed the current situation 
following the death of Hakimullah Mehsud in a drone strike along with 
the possibilities of peace talks with the Taliban.<br />

Khursheed Shah said he will support whatever decision the government 
takes to deal with Taliban. Earlier, Shah Tuesday urged the people to 
unite and assured fullest cooperation to the government in resolving the
 issues confronting the country.<br />

He said it was the opinion of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) that the policies of dictators have created problems.<br />

Referring to the All Parties Conference (APC), he said the opposition
 had given a mandate to the government for holding a dialogue with the 
Taliban.<br />

The opposition wants to strengthen the country’s democratic 
institutions and does not want to give a tough time to the government,

MANILA (Associated Press) Thousands of people are believed dead after
 Typhoon Haiyan battered the central Philippines with sustained winds of
 235 kph (147 mph) and a storm surge of 6 meters (20 feet). Here are 
some facts about Philippines:<br />

GEOGRAPHY: More than 7,100 islands are spread over 116,000 square 
miles a bit more territory than Arizona between the far western Pacific 
and the South China Sea.<br />

DEMOGRAPHICS: It has 100 million people, 12th globally between Mexico
 and Ethiopia, and they are young. The median Filipino half older, half 
younger is 23 years old, compared with 37 in the United States. More 
than 80 percent are Catholic, and 5 percent are Muslim.<br />

Literacy is high: More than 95 percent of the population age 15 and 
older can read and write. Average life expectancy at birth is 69 for men
 and 75 for women.<br />

POLITICS: The former Spanish and later American colony has been 
independent since July 4, 1946. It is a democracy with an elected 
president and a Congress comprising a House of Representatives and a 
Senate. The capital is Manila. The country spent nine years under 
martial law during the dictatorial reign of President Ferdinand Marcos, 
who was ousted in the non-violent "People Power" uprising of 1986. The 
country has struggled with a communist insurgency and a rebellion in the
 southern region of Mindanao, where Muslims seek autonomy or 
independence.<br />

TIES TO AMERICA: In 1898, the United States seized the Philippines 
from Spain in the Spanish-American War. Filipinos rose up in rebellion 
against American rule from 1899 to 1902. Some of the bloodiest fighting 
took place on the island of Samar, which was hit hard by Typhoon Haiyan.
 Since independence, the Philippines has maintained close ties to the 
United States. More than 1.8 million Philippine-born people live in 
America. They account for nearly 16 percent of Asian-born American 
residents, behind only China and India.<br />

ECONOMY: The Philippine economy grew 6.8 percent last year, second to
 China among major Asian economies, and is expected to match that pace 
this year. The Philippines last year had a $431 billon economy, No. 32 
in the world, measured by gross domestic product. Its GDP per person was
 about $4,500, No. 165 in the world. The economy benefits from money 
sent home by 4 million to 5 million Filipinos working overseas. It 
suffers from pockets of poverty and from endemic corruption: It scores 
34 out of 100 on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions 
Index, which measures the perceived level of government corruption; a 
score of 100 indicates that the government is seen as clean. The 
Philippines ranked far below average, 105th out of 174 countries ranked.<br />

Liaquat Baloch on Monday said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)
 had issued a political press release which was unbecoming of a military
 force.<br />

Speaking to media representatives after a meeting of the party’s 
Majlis-i-Shura (Advisory Council), Baloch said the army had no right to 
interfere in matters of politics.<br />

On Sunday, JI chief Syed Munawar Hasan’s recent controversial 
statements of giving the certificate of martyrdom to Tehrik-i-Taliban 
Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakeemullah Mehsud and deriding military personnel 
who have rendered sacrifices in the war against terrorists, drew strong 
ire of the army which asked the JI chief to tender an unconditional 
apology.<br />

Earlier today, the JI chief said he was standing by his statement in 
which he termed Mehsud a ‘martyr’, as his party’s Majlis-i-Shura 
(Advisory Council) met today to discuss the issues of local body 
elections, drone attacks and the controversy caused by the ‘martyr’ 
remark.<br />

During the Majlis-i-Shura meeting, Baloch said the country would have
 to get out of the drone war in order to establish sustainable peace.<br />
