MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia is offering to sell Egypt modern helicopters and air defence
 systems in a landmark deal reportedly worth $2 billion that would mark a
 revival of large-scale military cooperation, a Russian official said 
Friday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei 
Shoigu visited Egypt on Thursday seeking lucrative contracts with the 
government after the ousting of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

Lavrov confirmed that military collaboration was discussed in talks 
between Shoigu and his Egyptian counterpart General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi
 but gave no further details.

However Mikhail Zavaly, a senior official with Russia's arms export 
agency Rosoboronexport who will lead its delegation at the upcoming 
Dubai air show, confirmed Russia wanted to sell military hardware to Egypt.

"Now we are offering Egypt modern helicopters, air defence equipment and the modernisation of previously purchased military equipment," he told the RIA Novosti news agency.

"The word is now with our partners," he added.

He did not give further details but Russian daily Vedomosti said 
negotiations were ongoing about the sale of MiG-29M/M2 fighter jets, low
 range air defence systems and Kornet anti-tank rockets.

Citing Russian defence sources, Vedomosti said the deals were worth 
more than $2 billion and could be financed by Saudi Arabia, which was 
instrumental in the removal of Morsi.

The Soviet Union was the main supplier of arms to Egypt in the 1960s 
and early 1970s but cooperation declined after the peace treaty with 
Israel when Cairo began to enjoy generous US aid.

However Washington suspended some of its military aid to Cairo after 
Morsi's ousting and Zavaly confirmed that Moscow had sensed an 
opportunity.

"There is never a vacuum on the international arms market. If one supplier goes away, then another one appears," he told RIA Novosti.</div>

ISLAMABAD (Online) - US Animal Health Attaché Dr David Ashford says 
Pakistan can lead the milk producing market around the globe if it 
succeeds in controlling Foot-and-Mouth disease. 
In an interview with Radio Pakistan Haroon Baloch‚ David Ashford said
 35 to 50 percent of all animals are exposed to the Foot-and-Mouth 
disease virus by the time they reach one-year of age. 
He said the number is high‚ which is why the United States is dedicated to help Pakistan control this disease. 
He said milk is an important source of food not only in Pakistan‚ but
 also in rest of the world. However‚ presence of foot-and-mouth disease 
in Pakistan prohibits its exports. 
Referring to the recent livestock studies done in the country‚ he 
suggested a single buffalo affected by FMD virus costs the farmer over 
eighteen thousand rupees for six months of milk production. 
He stressed the need to a national program in place to control the 
disease that would include a strong veterinary service‚ effective 
national vaccination‚ animal movement control with inspection and 
certification of vaccination. 
US Department of Agriculture with assistance of Food and Agriculture 
Organization and Government of Pakistan has set up essential diagnostic 
capacities to confirm FMD infection in public laboratories in all 
provinces. 
Currently‚ Pakistan is the fourth largest milk producer in the world 
despite the limited productions and lacking value-added facilities. 
According to Economic Survey of Pakistan 2012-13‚ contribution of 
livestock sector to agriculture value-added is over 55 percent and to 
the Gross Domestic Product is 11.9 percent. 
Widely considered as the economic engine of the country s economy‚ 
the sector has a huge potential to grow and only safe and standardized 
milk production of the country may improve the rankings among other milk
 producers in the world.

QUETTA - Earthquake shocks were felt in Quetta, Sibi and its surrounding areas on Friday. 
According to Met Office, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.5 
whereas its epicenter was 58 kilometers below the ground in the South 
East of Quetta. 
Fear gripped the affected areas and people came out of their homes, however no casualties were immediately reported.

Boys a bit more likely than girls to be born early

WASHINGTON:
 Boys are slightly more likely to be born premature than girls, and they
 tend to fare worse, too, says a new report on the health of the world's
 newborns. 
 
"This is a double whammy for boys," said Dr. Joy Lawn of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who led the team of researchers. "It's a pattern that happens all over the world." 
The
 gender difference isn't large: About 55 percent of preterm births in 
2010 were male, the report found. Nor is it clear exactly why it 
happens. 
The finding comes from a series of international studies being published Friday that examine newborn health
 and prematurity. About 15 million babies worldwide are born too soon, 
most of them in Africa and parts of Asia where survival is difficult for
 fragile newborns. Globally, about 1 million babies die as a direct 
result of preterm birth and another million die of conditions for which 
prematurity is an added risk, the researchers calculated. 
Friday's
 report offers some of the first estimates of how many preemie survivors
 go on to suffer certain disabilities, and found that where these babies
 are born, and how early, determines their risk. 
Overall, Lawn 
said about 7 percent of survivors have two of the most burdensome 
disabilities: neurologic-developmental impairment ranging from learning disabilities to cerebral palsy, and vision loss. 
But
 the biggest risk is to the youngest preemies, those born before 28 
weeks gestation. Worldwide, 52 percent of them are estimated to have 
some degree of neurodevelopmental impairment, the report found. 
Moreover, the risk of impairment in middle-income countries is double that of wealthy countries like the U.S. 
For example, China is saving more preemies' lives but at the cost of their vision, Lawn said. 
Middle-income
 countries are missing out on a lesson the U.S. learned the hard way 
several decades ago, that giving these tiny babies too much oxygen can 
trigger a potentially blinding condition called retinopathy of prematurity. 
"Disability
 is not something that's inevitable. It's preventable," she said, 
calling for improved quality of care including eye checks to prevent or 
reduce vision loss. 
The March of Dimes reported this month that 
11.5 percent of U.S. births now are preterm. That rate is inching down, 
thanks mostly to fewer babies being born just a few weeks early as 
standards for elective deliveries have tightened, but it still is higher
 than in similar countries. 
For the public, the gender difference 
may be the most surprising finding of Friday's report, although Dr. 
Edward McCabe of the March of Dimes says pediatric specialists have long noticed that baby boys start out a bit more vulnerable. 
"People are curious about it. We'd like to understand why this occurs," McCabe said. 
One
 possible reason: Mothers have a higher risk of certain pregnancy 
complications — high blood pressure and placenta abnormalities — when 
carrying boys, Lawn said. 
And if a boy preemie and a girl preemie 
are born at the same gestational age, the boy will be at higher risk of 
death or disability, she said. But Friday's report concluded there is 
too little information to quantify how big that risk is. 
"Girls 
walk sooner than boys. They talk sooner than boys. They develop more 
quickly. That's also true in utero," Lawn said. For a preterm baby, "the
 difference of a few days maturity between a boy and a girl can mean the
 difference between major lung complications or not." 
It's not 
just a prematurity issue. The report found that full-term boys also are 
more likely than girls to experience other newborn health problems 
including birth complications. 
Other findings from the studies, 
funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and published in the 
journal Pediatric Research: 
—In high-income countries — the U.S., 
Canada, Australia and most of Europe — more than 80 percent of preemies 
both survive and thrive, although babies born even a little premature 
are more likely than full-term babies to be rehospitalized or have 
learning and behavioral challenges. 
—In low-income countries, 
preterm babies are 10 times as likely to die as those in high-income 
countries, and death is more common than surviving with a serious 
disability. 
—Aside from preterm birth, other leading causes of 
death and disability among newborns include birth complications that 
block breathing; severe jaundice and infections. (AP)

First Mosque Catering For Different Muslims Sects Constructed

The
 first mosque catering for both Pakistan's Sunni Muslims and Shiite 
Muslims is under construction in Pakistan's capital Islamabad to promote
 communication between religious sects and solve sectarian conflicts 
within the country. 
 
Zahid Iqbal, founder of the mosque, says that it is the first one in Pakistan catering to different Muslim sects. 
 
The mosque, which is located at the foot of a mountain in the northwest 
Islamabad, has not yet been completed. However, it has already attracted
 many local residents to worship. 
 
"I have had such a thought since I was young. Our society should have a 
mosque like this one that all Muslims can worship here in their 
different ways. Even non-Muslims can come here to learn about Islam," 
said Iqbal. 
 
However, the construction of a mosque like this is a difficult thing in 
Pakistan, as Shiite and Sunni Muslims have separate mosques with very 
clear boundaries in the country. 
 
According to the regulations of the Capital Development Authority of 
Islamabad, any mosque before its construction should make an explicit 
registration with the government specifying whether it serves Shiite or 
Sunni Muslims. 
 
The regulation lowers the security risks to a certain extent, but builds an invisible wall between different Muslim sects. 
 
"According to regulations, when you register your mosque with the 
government department, you must declare its denomination. Thus, we 
encountered some troubles. We had to register a as foundation first, and
 then contrast the mosque based on it," said Iqbal. 
 
In order to promote communication and exchanges between different 
religious sects, Iqbal established a reading room in the mosque, which 
is open to the public for free. 
 
Iqbal hoped that, through reading and learning, different religious 
sects can strengthen communication and eliminate the misunderstandings 
and prejudices between them. 
 
However, misunderstandings and stereotypes have long existed. 
 
Since the opening of the mosque, many people have protested as they 
believe it does not conform to traditions and also violates Muslim 
doctrine. 
 
Therefore, Iqbal has even asked the police for help to keep the mosque safe. 
Despite difficulties, Iqbal said that he did not want to give up and 
hoped the mosque can play a vital role in solving the sectarian 
conflicts within the country. 
According to the blueprint, the mosque can accommodate nearly 2000 people after its completion. 
 
However, in view of the longstanding religious conflicts in Pakistan, 
some experts said that things may go contrary to Iqbal's wishes. 
 
"A mosque without any boundaries related to religious sects or 
particular groups of people is extremely necessary. It's an amazing idea
 and a good practice. But I suggest that we have to be cautious in the 
practice, because when different groups of gather together, it may have 
the wrong effect," said Khursheed Nadeem, a professor from International
 Islamic University.

Athletes come, athletes go. But Sachin Tendulkar will live on. 
 
Not
 on the cricket pitch. That part of his life, and ours, is ending. But 
in a billion-plus hearts and minds. In 24 years since he first wielded 
his bat for India, the "Little Master," a giant of 5-foot-5, has been 
one of the finest ambassadors for the world's second most populous 
nation, their fortunes inextricably linked. 
As India tested nuclear weapons
 in the 1990s, Tendulkar stamped his mark on world cricket with his 
bold, confident strokes. Tormenting bowlers far bigger than him, from 
nations far wealthier and better resourced than his own, on all kinds of
 grounds and in all conditions, Tendulkar seemed to embody the more 
assertive and ambitious country that India was becoming. 
As the Indian economy took off — expanding more than five-fold in the three decades that Tendulkar has been completing his hostile takeover of cricket's record books — he earned fabulous wealth, becoming one of the highest-paid athletes in any sport. 
But
 television made and kept Tendulkar accessible to Indians. So did his 
humble demeanor. In a country of overlapping deities, competing 
religions and vast wealth gaps, where social tensions have frequently 
spilled over in blood, Indians could agree, as their T-shirts said on 
Thursday at his 200th and last test match, that "Sachin is God." 
He
 found such adulation tough to handle at times. In the teeming streets 
of Mumbai, where he was born and got his start in first-class cricket in
 1988, his career came full circle
 this week with the city hosting his swansong match that became "a 
little difficult," as Tendulkar so delicately put it. "There's a huge 
following. Wherever you go, people are around." 
For snippets of 
peace and quiet, Tendulkar went for early morning drives. As much as 
they envied and gnashed teeth over Tendulkar's skills — "I'll be going 
to bed having nightmares of Sachin," said bowling great Shane Warne in 1998 after touring India with Australia — some players acknowledged they wouldn't like to swap their lives for his. 
Tendulkar was just a kid, a 16-year-old with a shock of curly hair, when he made his debut against rival Pakistan in 1989, a tumultuous year when the Berlin Wall fell and China's communists slaughtered innocents around Tiananmen Square in Beijing. 
When
 marveling at Tendulkar's longevity, it's hard to decide which is more 
astounding: that the 40-year-old was still thumping West Indies bowlers 
for four in his last match or that a man so reserved and measured has 
functioned so brilliantly, without sordid scandals often associated with
 money, fame and ego, under the microscope of 1.2 billion people — 350 
million more than when Tendulkar debuted for India — for whom cricket 
isn't just a sport but THE sport. 
His timing was impeccable: not 
just with the bat, but also because his era coincided with and fueled 
the monetization of cricket. His thumping strokes made for gripping 
television, both in the faster, more furious one-day format and in more 
patient five-day tests. He was the first batsman to score a 
double-century in one-day internationals. As with Michael Jordan for NBA
 fans or Diego Maradona in soccer, Tendulkar is one of those rare 
athletes whose otherworldly excellence leaves lasting marks on admirers. 
"I
 will tell this for life: I was here today," said a fan's banner at the 
Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, illustrating the expectations Tendulkar has 
lived with. On Thursday, with fans' chants of "Sachin! Sachin!" turning 
the stadium into a cauldron of noise, he looked oddly calm as he walked 
to the crease, shyly acknowledging the West Indies players who formed 
two lines in a guard of honor. He warmed up by swinging his bat with its
 handle in the colors of the Indian flag: orange, white and green. 
Tendulkar's
 dozens of batting records — among them nearly all the big ones, 
including most runs and centuries in both tests and one-day 
internationals — flowed not only from his physical skills but also his 
steeliness. The only time he put a foot wrong on Thursday, despite what 
must have been almost intolerable pressure to perform and boiling 
emotions, was when he tripped slightly climbing the stadium stairs at 
the end of the day, after a seemingly nerveless 38 not out that means he
 will bat again Friday. 
Of all the millions of words devoted to 
Tendulkar, his former teammate Rahul Dravid said it best: "To bat for my
 life, I would probably choose Sachin." 
For 1.2 billion reasons 
and more, Tendulkar's retirement leaves a void that can never completely
 be filled. There are and always will be other great cricketers. But 
99.9 percent of them will fall short against the benchmark that was 
Tendulkar. 
New stars will come and go. But in 10, 20 or 30 years, cricket fans will still be saying: "You should have seen God." (AFP)

"I don't know what I did. It was a bit silly," said Steyn on Thursday after he had helped restrict Pakistan to 98-9 in 20 overs. 
"I
 think I have got him out a couple of times now so you tend to do silly

Modern dogs descended from European wolves

WASHINGTON: If your dog could talk, he might have a European accent. 
 
A
 new study out Thursday comparing DNA from modern canines to ancient 
fossils suggests that today's pets descended from now-extinct 
populations of wolves in Europe. 
Man's earliest best friends 
likely scavenged bones from scrap piles left behind by hunter-gatherers,
 said the report by international researchers in the journal Science. 
The bolder the wolf, the more he would be able to eat and the more loyal to humans he would become. 
Scientists now believe this process of domestication likely began as many as 19,000 to 32,000 years ago. 
"All
 modern dogs have a very close relationship to ancient dogs or wolves 
from Europe," lead author Olaf Thalmann, a researcher at the University 
of Turku in Finland, told AFP. 
The team analyzed the mitochondrial DNA
 of 18 prehistoric canines -- eight dogs and 10 wolves -- and compared 
them to 77 mitochondrial genomes, showcasing traits inherited from the 
mother, from dogs from all over the world. 
The ancient samples 
came from Russia, Ukraine, Central Europe, the United States and 
Argentina, Thalmann said. Some were more than 30,000 years old. 
The modern DNA from dogs and wolves spanned the globe, from Israel to China, Sweden to Mexico. 
"The oldest domesticated dog material came from Europe," said co-author Robert Wayne, a professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California Los Angeles. 
"It was an inescapable conclusion." 
However, other researchers say the matter of who tamed dogs first and where it happened is far from settled. 
A separate team of researchers published a study in Science in 2002, saying that modern dogs came from southern China. 
"Our data points to origins in China and I am still pretty sure that is the place," said Peter Savolainen, an associate professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. 
Savolainen said the study by Thalmann and colleagues lacks samples from important parts of the world -- namely the Middle East and China. 
"If
 you are looking for the origins of dogs and you only have samples from 
Europe, then of course it must be Europe," he told AFP. 
Savolainen
 said that much like the "Out of Africa" theory that says humans 
originated in Africa and migrated elsewhere, dog history follows an "Out
 of south China" scheme. 
"You see several branches that are unique among dogs in south China and you don't see them anywhere else," he said. 
Asked about the criticism from China theorists, Thalmann countered that his team used more complete DNA sequencing and older samples that show Europe was indeed the place where it all began. 
Still,
 the matter is far from settled, Thalmann told AFP. More research in the
 years to come may reveal more on the topic, perhaps through the 
discovery of more fossils, or a more complete look at the genetic data. 
In
 the meantime, most experts agree that early dogs became a part of human
 life long before the development of agriculture and farming societies. 
Little is known about the people who domesticated them, or how they did it. 
But Savolainen believes that wolves took the lead when it came to befriending humans, at least initially. 
"They
 approached human camps and ate from the scrap heaps and those who dared
 come closer would get most of the food and they would have an 
evolutionary advantage," he told AFP. 
"So with each generation 
they would sort of tame themselves to get accustomed to humans. That is 
everybody's favorite theory, and I think it is a nice theory as well." 
As
 some wolves relied less on killing prey and more on eating scraps, 
their snouts gradually grew shorter. They likely followed human groups 
whenever they picked up and moved camps. 
Then, about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, the closer friendship truly began. 
"At
 some point, people and wolves really started interacting and humans 
took over the rest of the domestication process," said Savolainen. 
Thalmann said his team's evidence suggests dogs likely accompanied European explorers to the New World. (AFP)

prepared to keep up the traditional religious devotion to commemorate 
the 'martyrdom' of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the

--14 centuries ago. 
The mobile phone services have already started
 going down in vulnerable cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi,

PARIS (AFP) - The United Nations
 has activated a constellation of satellites to help relief operations 
in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines, an official said on Thursday. 
Catherine Proy of France s National Centre
 for Space Studies (CNES) said the first discussions to activate the 
so-called International Charter on Space and Major Disasters took place 
on November 7, the day before Typhoon Haiyan struck. 
Under the Charter, 15 space agencies or national organisations agree to pool 25 ground-imaging satellites to help relief efforts hampered by a natural catastrophe, such as a storm, earthquake or tsunami. 
Their data can identify roads, bridges or railway lines
 that are passable or structures that are damaged or intact. "The 
charter was activated by the United Nations and its Office for the 
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs," said Proy, whose organisation is part of the Charter group. 
"It was activated almost preventively. The first discussions took 
place on the Thursday, the day before the typhoon crossed the 
Philippines," Proy said in an interview with AFP. "The satellites were 
re-tasked on the Friday, the day when the cyclone hit." 
The UN is an "authorised user" of the Charter, giving it the right to invoke it. 
Once activated, space technicians under a rotating arrangement 
determine which satellites are available and best suited for the job, 
and then send a programme request to the operator for images. 
Satellites take the pictures as they fly over a zone, giving this 
mission a priority over other jobs. The data are usually available 
within 24 hours and are provided for free. 
The maps are put together by UNOSAT, a Geneva-based UN institute that
 specialises in satellite applications, which then disseminates it to aid agencies that request them. 
"Around 10 satellites have been requested, particularly optical satellites," said Proy. 
The first job was to identified undamaged buildings, especially in 
Tacloban, that could be used by relief organisations, she said. 
"We have now moved more towards Cebu and Bogo but there are also 
requests to cover areas that are much, much farther west, on other 
islands," said Proy. "It s very complicated for everyone," she said. 
"The biggest problem is that there is a huge area of destruction. To 
cover it, we need high-resolution images, but these have a limited scale
 of 20 kilometres by 20 kilometres (12 miles by 12 miles). 
"So right now we are only partially mapping the affected areas. We 
are also encountering problems with cloud cover, as it is the middle of 
the cyclone season."

Youm-e-Ashura is being observed today

LAHORE - Youm-e-Ashur is being observed today (Friday) 
with reverence and religious fervour throughout the country to pay 
tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions for their 
supreme sacrifices.

Every year, this day is observed on 10th of Muharram to commemorate 
the supreme sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his 72 
companions at Karbala to uphold the truth.

Taziya, Alam and Zuljanah processions would be taken out in all 
cities and towns across the country. On the day, religious clerics and 
scholars would shed light over the historical, social and religious 
aspects of supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

In Lahore, the main Zuljanah procession was taken out from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate amid tight security arrangements.

Thousands of Azadars are participating in the Zuljanah procession 
which after passing through its traditional route will culminate at 
Karbala Gamay Shah in the evening where Majlis-e-Sham-e-Ghariban will be
 held to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) in which 
noted

‘Zakerin’ will highlight the importance of the sacrifice of grandson of Prophet (PBUH) and his companions.

The main Zuljanah procession in Karachi will be taken out from 
Nishtar Park and culminate at Hussainia Iranian Imam Bargah, Kharadar 
after passing through its traditional route in the city.

In Dera Ismail Khan, the main procession of 10 Muharram was taken out
 from Imam Bargha Bamu Shah at 10:00pm on Thursday which will culminate 
at Kotli Imam Hussain at noon today after passing through different 
parts of the city.

In Peshawar, the main main Zuljanah procession procession will be 
taken out from Imam Bargha Jan at 11:00am. The procession will pass 
through different parts of Yaqa Toot area and culminate at Kohati Bazar 
in the evening.

In Rawalpindi, the central procession of Ashura will be taken out 
from Imam Bargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain, College Road and from Imam 
Bargah Hifazat Ali Shah, Bohar Bazar including the Zuljanah that will be
 taken out from Imam Bargah Ashiq Hussain Talee Mohallah.

All the processions would join at Fowra Chowk to form a main 
procession, which would be culminated at Karbala Graveyard , Westridge 
almost at 10:00 pm , where Mujlis Sham-e-Ghareeban would be held.

Security has been put on high alert in all parts of country and 
thousands of police officials have been deployed for security of 
Youm-e-Ashura processions.
