JI writes letter to PM over ISPR statements

 Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) sent a letter to Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of 
Pakistan, over the statements made by Inter Services Public Relations 
(ISPR) on Wednesday, ARY News reports.<br />
<br />
The letter was sent by Liaquat Baloch, Secretary General of JI, and was received in the Camp Office of PM in Model Town.<br />
<br />
JI, in the letter, wrote that the history of the party was ignored by 
the statements made by ISPR. It was written that JI had given great 
sacrifices for the country in East Pakistan.<br />
<br />
It was stated that all the institutions have to follow the </span></span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;">law and </span><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">constitution.<br />
<br />
The party also said in the letter that the statements made by Syed 
Munawwar Hassan, Ameer JI, were taken in the wrong context. The party 
considers the people killed due to terrorism and drone strikes as 
martyrs.</span></span></div>

PTI parts ways with QWP in KP govt

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, Wednesday, parted 
ways with Qaumi Watan Party in the provincial coalition government of 
Khyber Pukhtunkhwa.
<br />
A press note issued here said that PTI Chairman Imran Khan, 
Wednesday, issued a strong advisory to Chief Mninster Pervez Khattak to 
pull out of the coalition with Qaumi Watan Party (QWP).<br />

Imran said the QWP was given two warnings about the corruption of two
 of their ministers but this party chose to tolerate corruption and 
instead showed its displeasure at the corruption being pointed out by 
boycotting the provincial cabinet meetings. Today two of their ministers
 were dismissed by the chief minister.<br />

He also stated that PTI was elected on a mandate against corruption and there is zero tolerance for any form of corruption.<br />

"This should be a clear warning for all our Ministers and MPAs and 
PTI cannot have as a coalition partner any Party that tolerates 
corruption," Imran made clear.<br />

"Our JI Ministers have proven exemplary in this regard and we respect
 them for their commitment towards anti corruption", Khan added.<br />

Philippines: Looting, gunfire break out in typhoon-hit city

TACLOBAN (AP) - Mobs overran a rice warehouse on the island worst hit
 by the Philippine typhoon, setting off a wall collapse that killed 
eight people and carting off thousands of sacks of the grain, while <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">security forces</span> Wednesday exchanged gunfire with an armed gang.<br />

The incidents in or close to the storm-ravaged city hosting <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">international relief</span> efforts add to concerns about the slow pace of aid distribution and that parts of the disaster zone are descending into chaos.<br />

Five long days after the typhoon wasted the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">eastern seaboard</span>
 of the Philippines, the cogs of what promises to be a massive 
international aid effort are beginning to turn, but not quickly enough 
for the some 600,000 people displaced, many of them homeless, hungry and
 thirsty.<br />

"There s a bit of a logjam to be absolutely honest getting stuff in 
here," said UN staffer Sebastian Rhodes Stampa against the roar of a 
C-130 <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">transport plane</span> landing behind him at the airstrip in Tacloban, one of the hardest-hit cities.<br />

"It s almost all in country either in Manila or in Cebu, but it s not
 here. We re going to have a real challenge with logistics in terms of <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">getting things</span>
 out of here, into town, out of town, into the other areas," he said. 
"The reason for that essentially is that there are no trucks, the roads 
are all closed."<br />

Planes, ships and trucks were all on their way to the region, loaded with generators, <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">water purifying</span> kits and <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">emergency lights</span>
 vital equipment needed to sustain a major relief mission. Airports were
 reopening in the region, and the US military said it was installing 
equipment to allow the damaged Tacloban aiport to operate 24-7.<br />

Tacloban s mayor, Alfred Romualdez, urged residents to flee the city because <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">local authorities</span>
 were having trouble providing food and water and maintaining order, The
 New York Times reported. He said the city was in desperate need of 
trucks to distribute relief shipments that were accumulating at the 
city s airport as well as equipment to pull decaying corpses from the 
rubble.<br />

Eight people were crushed to death when the mob stormed a rice 
warehouse around 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Tacloban on Tuesday and 
carried off thousands of sacks of grain, according to National Food 
Authority spokesman Rex Estoperez.<br />

On Wednesday, gunfire broke out close to the city s San Juanico 
bridge on Wednesday between security forces and armed men, but the 
circumstances were unclear, according to footage on local TV.<br />

Since the storm, people have broken into homes, malls and garages, 
where they have stripped the shelves of food, water and other goods. 
Authorities have struggled to stop the looting. There have been 
unconfirmed reports of armed gangs of robbers operating in a systematic 
manner, but they have not been confirmed.<br />

An 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew was in place across the region. Despite incidents, police said the situation was improving.<br />
"We have restored order," said Carmelo Espina Valmoria, director of the 
Philippine National Police special action force. "There has been looting
 for the last three days, but the situation has stabilized."<br />

The death toll rose to 2,275, according a national tally kept by the 
disaster agency. That figure is expected to rise, perhaps significantly,
 when accurate information is collected from the entirety of the 
disaster zone, which spreads over a wide swath of the eastern and 
central Philippines but appears to be concentrated on two main islands, 
Leyte and Samar.<br />

The congressman for Eastern Samar province, a coastal region that 
bore the full force of the storm, said 211 had been killed there and 45 
were missing. He said some villages have been wiped out, with 
practically no structures standing. In one town, bodies remain lying on 
the road because help has not come to retrieve or bury them. Other towns
 have conducted mass burials.<br />

"The situation there was horrible," Ben Evardone told a local 
television station. "Some communities disappeared, entire villages were 
wiped out. They were shouting  food, food, food!  when they saw me."<br />

US Brig Gen. Paul Kennedy promised a response akin to the widely 
praised US military one after the 2004 Asian tsunami, when fleets of 
helicopters dropped water and food to hundreds of isolated communities 
along the coast.<br />
"You are not just going to see Marines and a few planes and some 
helicopters," Kennedy said. "You will see the entire Pacific Command 
respond to this crisis."<br />

A Norwegian ship carrying supplies left from Manila, while an 
Australian air force transport plane took off from Canberra carrying a 
medical team. British and American navy vessels are also en route to the
 region.<br />

At the Tacloban airport, makeshift clinics have been set up and 
thousands of people were waiting for a flight out. A doctor said 
supplies of antibiotics and anesthetics arrived Tuesday for the first 
time.<br />

"Until then, patients had to endure the pain," said Dr. Victoriano Sambale.<br />

Relief officials said comparing the pace of this operation to those 
in past disasters was largely pointless because each posed unique 
challenges.<br />

In Indonesia s Aceh, the worst-hit region by the 2004 tsunami, relief
 hubs were easier to set up than in Tacloban. The main airport there was
 functioning 24-7 within a couple of days of the disaster.<br />

While devastation in much of the city of Banda Aceh was total, large 
inland parts of the city were undamaged, providing a base for aid 
operations and temporary accommodation for the homeless.<br />

The meeting decided to take appropriate steps for bringing the prices

LB polls in Punjab, Sindh postponed

ISLAMABAD – Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmad 
Khan has said that local bodies election have been postponed in Punjab 
and Sindh.<br />

Talking to newsmen on Wednesday, Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan said that the 
Election Commission has proposed January 30, 2014 for holding Local 
Bodies elections in Punjab and January 18 in Sindh.<br />

He said that the elections in Federal Capital and Cantonment Boards would be held in February.<br />

Ishtaq added that the Local Bodies elections in Balochistan would be held on December 7 as per old schedule.<br />

He said that the candidates would have to file nomination papers 
again however, the nomination papers fees submitted so far would remain 
valid for the new schedule.<br />

Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan has clarified that 
all candidates will have to re-submit their nomination papers for the 
local bodies  elections under the new schedule to be issued by the 
Commission.<br />

Talking to newsmen in Islamabad on Wednesday evening‚ he‚ however‚ 
said those who have deposited fee will not be required to pay the fee 
again.<br />

The Secretary said new nomination forms will replace the old ones.<br />

He said the Commission has convened a meeting on 19th of this month 
to prepare the next plan of action following postponement of polls in 
Punjab and Sindh to new dates.<br />

It will be attended by representatives of the provincial governments‚
 Ministries of Interior‚ Defence and Law; Printing Corporation of 
Pakistan and NADRA.<br />

Giving background of postponement‚ he said Sindh and Punjab were not 
prepared to hold local government elections but Balochistan had already 
completed all the steps.<br />

The electoral process is proceeding ahead smoothly in Balochistan and elections would be held on 7th of next month.<br />

He said local elections in Sindh would be held on 18th of January and in Punjab on 30th of January next year.<br />

He said a new schedule would be issued by the Commission.<br />

<span class="news_detail" id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblNewsDetail">ISLAMABAD: The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">federal government</span> has decided to shut down <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">cellular phone services</span> in 25 cities on Thursday and Friday to protect gatherings and processions being held in connection with Yaum-e-Ashur. <br /><br />The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">Pakistan</span> Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has sent the list of cities to mobile <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">phone companies</span>. <br /><br />According to sources, mobile phone service will remain shut in <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">Karachi</span>, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Sehwan, Nawabshah and Larkana for two days. <br /><br />In
 restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, there will be no mobile phone 
service in Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and parts
 of Peshawar. <br /><br />In addition, mobile phone firms have been asked to
 block services in FaisalabAd, Sargodha, Rahimyar Khan, Bhakkar, Dera 
Ghazi Khan, Muzffargarh, Pakpattan, Multan, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, 
Jhang and Attock. <br /><br />Sources say that mobile phone service will also be blocked on routes of Muharram processions in specific cities</span><br />

<span class="location">PESHAWAR: </span>Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has suspended three provincial ministers for alleged involvement in <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">corrupt practices</span> and poor performance, <em>Express News</em> reported on Wednesday.<br />
<br />

The suspended ministers are Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Yousuf 
Ayub Khan and Quami Watan Party’s (QWP) Malik Ibrar Hussain Khan and 
Bakht Bedar.<br />

The PTI minister was also declared ineligible by the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">Supreme Court</span> for holding a <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">fake degree</span>.<br />

Yousuf was the Minister for Communications and Works, Bedar was Minister for Industries, Commerce and <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">Technical Education</span> and Malik was Minister for Environment.<br />

<strong>‘Stamping out corruption’</strong><br />

Earlier on November 8, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran 
Khan had urged Chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pervaiz Khattak, to 
investigate corruption in the province, <a href="http://insaf.pk/News/tabid/60/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/17546/PTI-Chairman-Imran-Khans-statement-on-KP-Ministers-corruption.aspx" target="_blank">according to PTI’s official website. </a><br />

The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">online press release</span> 
reiterated the party’s two electoral promises of bringing peace back to 
the country, particularly in K-P, and stamping out corruption.<br />

Young Frenchman too heavy to fly will go home by ship

 YORK CITY: A young Frenchman who weighs 230 kilograms (500 pounds) and 
was deemed too heavy to fly on a jetliner arrived in New York Tuesday to
 head home by ship.<br />
<br />
Kevin Chenais and his parents arrived at Penn Station in New York by train from Chicago. They will stay at a <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">hotel in Brooklyn</span> until they catch the Queen Mary 2 for England.<br />
Chenais, 22, has a hormone imbalance and came to the United States from France in 2012 for <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">obesity treatment</span> at the Mayo Clinic in Chicago. <br />
He had planned to fly home in late October but <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">British Airways</span> refused to let him board the plane on the grounds he was too fat.<br />
The family spent more than a week at a hotel near <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">Chicago airport</span> as they tried to resolve the situation.<br />
On Monday they decided to take a train to New York, from where they will sail for England on November 19.<br />
"It is mainly my parents who are angry," he told reporters, looking tired after the 19-hour <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">train trip</span> from Chicago.<br />
His
 father Rene criticized British Airways for paying just five nights in a
 hotel, where in the end they spent 13 days. He said the carrier has yet
 to refund their tickets.<br />
An airline spokesman said the carrier tried to find a solution but in the end it was not possible to tend to Chenais safely. <br />
Chenais needs oxygen constantly and medical oversight, so the week-long trip from New York to Southampton will not be easy. <br />
Chenais has mobility problems and gets around in an electric-<span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">powered wheelchair</span>.<br />
As he arrived in New York, with the help of the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">French consulate</span>, police and staff from the rail company Amtrak helped him off the train and out of the station.<br />
On Tuesday, his father said that two or three days after British Airways refused to let him fly, their <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">travel agent</span> said Air France and Swissair were willing to take him. But the family was out of money.<br />
"We paid $1,200 for the train and then $2,000 for the ship. We cannot pay any more," Rene Chenais said. (AFP)<br />

Oil prices rebound in Asia

SINGAPORE (AFP) - <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">Oil prices</span>
 rebounded in Asia Wednesday as traders pounced after sharp falls the 
previous day on forecasts of surging production in the United States, 
analysts said.<br />

New York's main contract, <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">West Texas</span>
 Intermediate (WTI) for December delivery, was up 10 cents at $93.14 a 
barrel in afternoon trade, while Brent North Sea crude for December 
gained 29 cents to $106.10.<br />

WTI tumbled $2.10 in New York and Brent eased 59 cents after the 
International Energy Agency forecast the United States would become the 
world's top oil producer by 2015 thanks to booming <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">shale oil</span> output.<br />

In its annual World Energy Outlook report released Tuesday, the EIA 
also said the US, currently the world's top crude consumer, is moving 
"steadily towards meeting all of its energy needs from domestic 
resources by 2035".<br />

David Lennox, resource analyst at Fat Prophets in Sydney, told AFP 
that dealers "reacted strongly" to the prospect of flush US supplies, 
causing the decline in WTI <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">prices</span> in New York.<br />

"Self-sufficiency in the United States was always on the horizon, but
 the timeline reported by the EIA really caused a shake-up for traders,"
 he said.<br />

Investors are keeping an eye on the West's attempts to forge a 
nuclear deal with Iran that could lead to a lifting of sanctions and 
release more of its oil into the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">global marketplace</span>.<br />

"I think traders realise that it will take a long time for a final 
completion of a deal regarding Iran as there are many parties involved 
and a lot of <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">opposing views</span>," Lennox said.<br />

The US, one of the six major powers negotiating with Iran, on Tuesday warned that fresh sanctions on the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">Islamic republic</span> proposed by key lawmakers could derail the diplomatic effort and risk war.<br />

The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">greenback</span> bought 99.45 yen in Tokyo midday trade, weakening from 99.62 yen in New York Tuesday afternoon.<br />

The euro strengthened to $1.3447 from $1.3433 while it bought 133.74 yen compared with 133.82 yen in US trade.<br />

Dealers are awaiting remarks Thursday from Janet Yellen, President <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">Barack Obama</span> s nominee to succeed chairman Ben Bernanke at the Federal Reserve, said a senior dealer at a major bank in Tokyo.<br />

Some investors want to push the dollar above the 100-yen mark but 
"many of us just don t want to make aggressive moves before we confirm 
Ms Yellen makes no negative surprises", the dealer said.<br />

Yellen will appear before US senators Thursday to defend her nomination.<br />

It comes as Fed policymakers debate whether the stimulus policy known
 as quantitative easing is still needed to support the world s largest 
economy.<br />

The central bank holds a regular two-day policy meeting next month after upbeat US data fuelled <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">speculation</span> that the Fed could start tapering its $85-billion-a-month bond-buying programme before year s end.<br />

Traders also are awaiting eurozone <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">industrial production</span> figures for September, due later Wednesday, which will be followed by July-September economic growth data on Thursday.<br />

Iraq violence claims more 18 lives

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A series of coordinated <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">bombings</span> <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">targeting</span>
 Shiite pilgrims ahead of major commemoration rituals were the deadliest
 in attacks across north and west Iraq that killed 18 people on 
Wednesday.<br />

The bloodshed is the latest in a months-long surge in violence that 
authorities have so far failed to stem despite several operations 
against insurgents, and have forced <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">Prime Minister</span> Nuri al-Maliki to appeal for help from Washington in combating militancy.<br />

Wednesday's violence came on the eve of annual ceremonies marking the
 anniversary of the death of a key figure in Shiite Islam, a period 
during which Sunni militants typically step up attacks on Shiites, whom 
they regard as apostates.<br />

The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">deadliest</span> unrest was on
 the outskirts of Baquba, which lies north of Baghdad and is one of 
Iraq's most violent areas, with three coordinating bombings targeting a 
gathering of Shiite <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">pilgrims</span> marking Ashura.<br />

The blasts killed at least eight people and wounded 25, security and medical officials said.<br />

In the days leading up to the climax of Ashura, which this year falls
 on Thursday, Shiite Muslims often set up procession tents where food is
 distributed to passers-by and pilgrims can gather.<br />

Other worshippers walk to Karbala, which is home to a shrine to Imam 
Hussein, whose death in 680 AD at the hands of the caliph Yazid has over
 time come to mark the symbolic split between Islam's Sunni and Shiite 
sects.<br />

Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda, who regard Shiite Muslims as 
unbelievers, often step up their targeting of Iraq's majority community 
during Ashura and the subsequent rituals of Arbaeen.<br />

Violence elsewhere in Iraq on Wednesday killed 10 people and police also gunned down three militants, officials said.<br />

East of the predominantly Sunni Arab town of Tikrit, a <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">suicide bomber</span> detonated a vehicle rigged with explosives at a police checkpoint, killing six people -- three policemen and three civilians.<br />

And near the former insurgent bastion of Fallujah, two bombs 
targeting the homes of policemen, followed by a third that went off as 
onlookers gathered at the scene, killed four people and wounded a dozen 
more overall.<br />

A police raid in the Jazeera desert region in northwest Iraq, 
meanwhile, led to three militants being killed. Four policemen were also
 wounded in the operation.<br />

Wednesday's deaths were the latest in Iraq's worst violence since 
2008, with more than 5,600 people killed this year despite tightened 
security measures and a swathe of operations against militants.<br />

Maliki has called for help from the United States in the form of 
intelligence-sharing and the delivery of new weapons systems in an 
effort to deal with the unrest.<br />

Turkey's foreign minister offered Ankara's assistance during a recent visit to Baghdad.<br />

In addition to major security problems, authorities have failed to 
provide adequate basic services such as electricity and clean water, and
 corruption is widespread.<br />

Political squabbling has paralysed the government, while parliament has passed almost no major legislation in years.<br />

assembly and Communication Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Yousuf Ayub

The Election Tribunal had declared Yousuf Ayub ineligible over his fake degree.

Three-member bench headed by chief justice iftikhar Muhammad iftikhar
 chaudhry conducted hearing of petition moved against KP minister Yousaf

ISLAMABAD -  Supreme Court has accepted the new 
schedule for local bodies polls proposed by the Election Commission of 
Pakistan.<br />

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the petition in this regard today (Wednesday).<br />

In a letter forwarded to SC Registrar, the Election Commission had 
suggested that local government elections in Punjab should be held on 
January 30, 2014, Sindh 18 January and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in February.<br />

The commission also proposed that elections in cantonment boards of 
all the provinces should be held in February. However, polls would be 
conducted in Balochistan as per schedule on December 7.<br />

Later, the apex court directed the Election Commission and provincial
 governments to decide the dates for the local bodies’ elections through
 mutual consultations.<br />

Meanwhile‚ the Election Commission says it has cancelled the previous schedule for local bodies’ polls in Sindh and Punjab.<br />

'Miracle' baby born in Philippine typhoon rubble

 Emily Sagalis cried tears of joy after giving birth to a "miracle" girl
 in a typhoon-ravaged Philippine city, then named the baby after her 
mother who went missing in the storm.<br />
<br />
The girl was born Monday
 in a destroyed airport compound that was turned into a makeshift 
medical centre, with her bed a piece of dirty plywood resting amid dirt,
 <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">broken glass</span>, twisted metal, nails and other debris.<br />
"She is so beautiful. I will name her Bea Joy in honour of my mother, Beatriz," Sagalis, 21, whispered shortly <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">after giving birth</span>.<br />
Sagalis said her mother was swept away when giant waves generated by Super Typhoon Haiyan surged into their home near <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">Tacloban city</span>, the capital of Leyte province which was one of the worst-hit areas, and she has not been seen since.<br />
More
 than 10,000 people are believed to have died in Leyte, and many 
hundreds on other islands across the central Philippines, which would 
make Haiyan the country's worst recorded <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">natural disaster</span>.<br />
But, in the most tragic of circumstances, Bea Joy restarted the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">cycle of life</span>.<br />
"She
 is my miracle. I had thought I would die with her still inside me when 
high waves came and took us all away," she said, as her teary-eyed 
husband, Jobert, clasped the baby and a volunteer held an IV drip above 
them.<br />
The husband said the first wave that came carried their <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">wooden home</span> in the coastal town of <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">San Jose</span> many metres inland, washing all of the family outside.<br />
He
 said the entire community had been washed away, with the once 
picturesque area replaced by rubble and the bloated remains of people 
and animals.<br />
"We are supposed to be celebrating today, but we are also mourning our dead," Jobert said.<br />
He said it was God's will that he found his wife floating amongst the debris. <br />
They were carried away for what felt like hours until the water subsided, and they found themselves sheltering in a  <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">school building</span> where other mud-soaked and injured survivors had huddled.<br />

Oldest big cat fossil found in Tibet: scientists

PARIS:
 An ancient skull found in Tibet indicates that big cats originated in 
central Asia, and not Africa as widely thought, palaeontologists 
reported on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
Dated at between 4.1 and 5.95 million 
years old, the fossil is the oldest remains ever found of a pantherine 
felid, as big cats are called.<br />
It compares with the previous felid
 record holder -- tooth fragments found in Tanzania that are estimated 
to be around 3.8 million years old.<br />
"This find suggests that big cats have a deeper evolutionary origin than previously suspected," said Jack Tseng of the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">University of Southern</span> California, who led the probe.<br />
Big cats, a group called Pantherinae, include tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards and jaguars.<br />
Their evolutionary odyssey has been hotly discussed, spiced by a lack of fossil evidence to settle the debate.<br />
Tseng, accompanied by <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">his</span> wife and fellow palaeontologist Juan Liu, and Gary Takeuchi of the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">Natural History Museum</span> of Los Angeles, made the find in 2010 in a remote border region between Tibet and Pakistan.<br />
It was found wedged in among more than 100 bones that were probably deposited by a river that exited a cliff.<br />
After three years of anatomical comparisons with other fossils, and using DNA data to build a <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">family tree</span>, the team is convinced the creature was a separate species.<br />
Among modern big cats, its closest relation is the snow leopard.<br />
The
 weight of evidence suggests that central or northern Asia was where 
Pantherinae originated, some 16 million years ago, according to the 
paper in the <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">British journal</span> Proceedings of the Royal Society B.<br />
They
 may have lived in a vast mountain refuge, formed by the uplifting 
Himalayas, feeding on equally remarkable species such as the Tibetan 
blue sheep.<br />
They then dispersed into <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">Southeast Asia</span>,
 evolving into the clouded leopard, tiger and snow leopard lineages, and
 later movements across continents saw them evolve into jaguars and 
lions.<br />
The split with Felinae -- a group that includes cougars, lynxes and <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">domestic cats</span> -- occurred about six million years ago.<br />
The
 newly-discovered felid has been called Panthera blytheae, after Blythe 
Haaga, "the snow leopard-loving daughter" of a couple which supports the

Google Glass gets music integration

NEW YORK CITY: Google's new Internet-connected eyewear will have music too.<br />
<br />
The company said Tuesday music would be available on Google Glass by allowing wearers to use Google's <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">online music services</span> to listen to songs and identify music. Specially designed earbuds will deliver high-quality audio from the eyewear.<br />
"Music is coming to Glass in several cool ways," a Google spokeswoman said in an email.<br />
"<span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">Sound search</span>
 can identify that song you're hearing but don't know the name of. All 
you have to say is 'OK Glass...what song is this?' and it?ll name the 
tune for you.<br />
"We'll also be adding a new <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">voice command</span> to Glass... that lets you access your tunes from Google <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">Play Music</span> or All Access."<br />
The new earbuds are "engineered specifically for Glass to provide high quality sound," the statement said.<br />
Google has not announced a public release date for Google Glass but speculation centers around early 2014.<br />
Facebook,
 Twitter and major news organizations have already tailored applications
 for Glass, which has only been made available to developers and a 
limited selection of "explorers" who paid $1,500 each for the eyewear.<br />
Envisioned uses range from practical tasks such as shopping or delivering local weather reports to sharing <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">real time video</span> streams or playing augmented reality games in which the world is the board.<br />
Glass lets wearers take pictures, record video, <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">send messages</span> or perform other tasks with touch controls or by speaking commands.<br />
Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">hot spots</span> or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">mobile phones</span>. Pictures or video can be shared through the Google+ social network. (AFP)<br />

E-cigarettes could save millions of lives, conference told

LONDON:
 Switching to e-cigarettes could save millions of smokers' lives, a 
conference on the rapidly expanding use of the devices has heard, though
 some delegates warned more research on the health effects is needed.<br />
<br />
The
 merits of e-cigarettes were thrashed out at a one-day gathering of some
 250 scientists, experts, policymakers and industry figures at the Royal
 Society in London.<br />
The use of <span class="adtext" id="adtext_1">electronic cigarettes</span>
 - battery-powered devices that simulate smoking by heating and 
vaporising a liquid solution containing nicotine - has grown rapidly, 
with tobacco manufacturers jumping on the trend.<br />
Sales have doubled annually for the past four years and there are an estimated seven million users across Europe.<br />
European lawmakers last month threw out a bid to curb sales of e-cigarettes by classifying them as medicinal products.<br />
Delegates in London debated how the market had moved faster than <span class="adtext" id="adtext_8">science</span> or the law.<br />
Many
 delegates merrily "vaped" away throughout the conference sessions, 
including one man puffing away on an e-pipe and another inhaling an 
e-cigar that lit up blue.<br />
"Cigarettes are killing 5.4 million people per year in the world," said Robert West, a <span class="adtext" id="adtext_3">health psychology</span> professor and the director of tobacco studies at Cancer Research UK.<br />
He
 told delegates switching to e-cigarettes could save millions of lives, 
but the debate was about "whether that goal can be realised and how best
 to do it".<br />
The professor said almost a third of attempts to <span class="adtext" id="adtext_2">quit smoking</span> involved e-cigarettes.<br />
Though they are estimated to be between 95 and 99 per cent safer than <span class="adtext" id="adtext_4">smoking cigarettes</span>,
 some countries have banned them and attendees debated the thorny issue 
of whether regulation - possibly under medicinal rules - should be 
brought in.<br />
They also debated their potential as a tool to quit 
smoking or whether they might become a gateway for those who have never 
smoked.<br />
Deborah Arnott, <span class="adtext" id="adtext_6">chief executive</span> of the Action on Smoking and Heath (ASH) pressure group, said e-cigarettes could be a leap forward for <span class="adtext" id="adtext_5">public health</span>
 but warned that not enough was known about their effects - and pointed 
out that the tobacco companies are snapping up the e-cigarette 
manufacturers.<br />
"ASH thinks that e-cigarettes have significant 
potential. They are a lot less harmful than smoking. Clearly smokers 
find them attractive, primarily as a way of quitting and moving away 
from smoking, which they know will kill them," she told AFP.<br />
"I 
think the jury's out and these products need regulating because there's a
 real concern that their safety and effectiveness is not guaranteed 
without regulation.<br />
"The <span class="adtext" id="adtext_7">tobacco companies</span>
 are moving in. For them it's potentially a 'Kodak moment' because if 
everyone moved to e-cigarettes, they'd lose their market so they've got 
to be in there. A lot of the bigger e-cigarette companies have already 
been bought up."<br />
She warned: "If there are carcinogens in there, 
you won't see an immediate effect but 10, 15, 20 years down the line, 
people will be dying from that.<br />
"The development of e-cigarettes is definitely running ahead of the science."<br />
Jacques
 Le Houezec, a consultant in public health and tobacco dependence from 
France, confirmed the booming growth was being driven by smokers, not 
laboratory experts.<br />
He told delegates that while e-cigarettes 
contained some harmful substances, the levels of toxicants were nine to 
450 times lower than in cigarette smoke.<br />
Matthew Moden, a director
 of English firm Liberty Flights, which makes e-liquid from 
pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, said the market had grown exponentially.<br />
Since starting in 2009 as an online retailer with three workers, the company now employs 75 people and has 10 stores.<br />
They
 retail a starter kit for $US40, and sell refils.The e-liquids come in a
 multitude of flavours, including menthol and forest fruits.<br />
"Our customers always refer to this as the product that helped them to stop smoking," he told AFP.<br />
"We welcome regulation. We need to be transparent with what we're selling, how safe it is and where it comes from.<br />
"In
 10, 12, 20 years' time, I think nicotine will be akin to caffeine in 
regard to how people consume it, how it's considered and the effect it

Karachi: Three militants, Rangers personnel killed in encounter

KARACHI  - Three militants allegedly belonging to  
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and one Rangers personnel were killed 
when a shootout occurred during a targeted operation conducted by the 
para-military force in Karachi's Gulshan-i-Buner area on Wednesday.<br />

Rangers sources confirmed that one of its personnel was killed during
 the clash and added that a huge quantity of weapons, including hand 
grenades, were also recovered from the killed suspects.<br />

Gulshan-i-Buner lies in Karachi's Landhi district near Quaidabad area.<br />

In an unrelated gunfiring incident one person was killed and another injured in Kalapul area of Karachi.<br />

Another person died of gunshot wounds near Five Star Chowrangi in North Nazimabad area of Karachi.<br />

In another incident, an exchange of gunfire took place between police
 and accused persons in Roshan Bagh area of Karachi's Al-Noor Society

 Countrywide mourning processions and majalis are being held on Tuesday 
on account of 7th of Muharram ul Haram.<br />

A large number of people in the country paying their respects to the 
martyrs of Karbala by participating in the mourning processions and 
Muharram majalis.<br />
<br />
Security has been on high alert throughout the country and tough 
security arrangements have been made to ensure protection of the 
mourning processions and majalis areas. CCTV cameras are placed on the 
routes of processions and strict checking is being carried out by 
security officials to control any unfortunate incident.</span></span><br />

Pakistan eye Twenty20 top spot in SA series

Pakistan will look to win the two-match Twenty20 series against South
 Africa starting on Wednesday to go to the top of the rankings in the 
shortest format of the game.
<br />
Besides improvement in the rankings, both the teams will also seek to
 get tuned up for the fifth edition of the World Twenty20 to be held in 
Bangladesh in March and April next year.<br />

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez said his team, ranked second behind 
Sri Lanka, are eager to win both games. “Of course it will be a big 
thing if we attain the number one ranking but for us it is more 
important to win<br />

Wednesday’s game and then think for the second,” said Hafeez at the launch of the Twenty20 Cup.<br />

Both matches will be played in Dubai, with the second clash taking place on Friday.<br />

“This series is also important for the fact that we have the World 
Twenty20 in four months so we have discussed it and want to have the 
same group of players so that we have a settled squad for the mega 
event,” said Hafeez.<br />

Pakistan will also look to put behind them the 4-1 thrashing in the 
five-match one-day series which finished on Monday, and Hafeez said it 
will be important to forget that loss.<br />

“We are disappointed at the one-day series loss but we have to put 
that behind us, it’s a new format and some new players have boosted our 
strength so we will definitely get better results,” said the 
33-year-old.<br />

Pakistan are bolstered by the return of all-rounders Abdul Razzaq and
 Shoaib Malik, while South Africa welcome Twenty20 specialists in Henry 
Davids, Aaron Phangiso and David Wiese as well as pace spearhead Dale 
Steyn, who has not played a T20 since December last year.<br />

South African captain Faf du Plessis said his team will start the series with confidence.<br />

“I think it’s nice to go into the series with a momentum and the 
confidence is there although it’s a different format and slightly 
different team but we look forward to it,” said Du Plessis, who also 
sought to underline the importance of gearing up for the World Twenty20.<br />

“We must find the right balance with the World Twenty20 in the 
sub-continent, which will have similar conditions to here,” said Du 
Plessis.<br />

 Federal government in the current year has set a target of half crore 
ton for the production of wheat.<br />

Target of wheat production was set in the meeting chaired by Federal 
Secretary of National Food Security and Research Seerat Asghar in 
Islamabad. In the meeting representatives of irrigation and agriculture 
ministry’s from all four provinces were present. In the meeting it was 
highlighted that during the Rabi season this year more rain is expected,
 due which there would be no shortage of water.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">Karachi: Crushing season of sugarcane in Sindh to start on 20h November, whereas, in Punjab it will start on 25<sup>th</sup> November Sugar mill owners announced.<br />

 This decision was taken so that soon after the crushing of sugarcane, 
cultivation of wheat could be made possible. According to the 
spokesperson of Kissan Board Pakistan, the crushing of sugarcane could 
not have been started so far whereas; the crops of sugarcane are ready 
for ripping on hundreds of thousands of acres area. Due to this, the 
cultivation of wheat is expected to be affected badly. If the crushing 
will not be started on time then the cultivation of wheat would be 
difficult for farmers and expensive too, as farmers would need excessive
 seeds for cultivation.<br />

The delay can also effect the expected production of wheat as well. 
Farmers have demanded from the government to start the crushing of 
sugarcane as soon as possible.</span></span><br />

 It is expected that mobile phone service will remain closed in Quetta 
and five cities of Sindh on Yaum-e-Ashur.<br /><br />The 
provincial governments of Sindh and Balochistan have mailed requests to 
the federal regime for closing mobile phone services in Quetta and five 
cities of Sindh on Yaum-e-Ashur.<br /><br />The Sindh regime has mailed 
requests for closure of mobile phone service on 9th and 10th days of 
Muharram-ul-Harram in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Khairpur, and Sukkur.<br /><br />The
 Balochistan government requested the federal regime, via mail on 
Friday, to close the mobile phone service in Quetta on 10th 
Muharram-ul-Haram from morning till evening.<br /><br />The Federal Interior Ministry has not responded on these requests of the home departments of Balochistan and Sindh yet. </span><br />
