KARACHI: Nine Muharram processions being taken out throughout the country in the memory of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and his companions in Karbala.
Cellular services have been suspended in 35 major cities around the country amid security fears.
The authorities have declared countrywide security high alert and pillion riding on motorbikes has been banned in sensitive cities and towns. Police commandos and rangers contingents have been deployed along the routes of mourning processions and the roads in the passage of processions have been sealed.
The central procession of Muharram 9 in Karachi started from Nishtar Park amid stringent security. The procession will march on traditional route and the mourners will offer Zohrain prayers at Imambargah Ali Raza. The procession passing through M.A. Jinnah will end at Boulton Market.
Additional I.G. Karachi Shahid Hayat has said that all possible measures have been taken for security of the mourning procession.Hayat said that 25,000 security men have been deployed for protection of the procession.
In Hyderabad central procession of nine Muharram has been taken out which will pass on its route through Latifabad No 4, 5 and 9.
In Faisalabad 85 processions will be taken out on nine Muharram. The authorities have stepped up security of the processions and mourning gatherings. Police have also started a search operation in the city to arrest suspects and capture illegal weapons.
