KARACHI: Authorities on Thursday blocked cellular phone services in several cities of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as part of security measures for Muharram processions.

Amid tight security, processions and majalis are being held across the country today on 9th Muharram in connection with Yaum-e-Ashur, the day marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A).

Sources said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked cellular services in Karachi, Sukkur and Hyderabad cities of Sindh. The services were also shut in Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan and parts of Peshawar city of KPK.

The closure of mobile phone services will also be extended to Punjab cities, including FaisalabAd, Sargodha, Rahimyar Khan, Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzffargarh, Pakpattan, Multan, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Jhang and Attock by this evening.

The services are likely to be restored on Friday evening.
